804785 2009-08-27 08:37:00 A couple of weeks ago I bought a Nikon D60 DSLR (my first DSLR :D )

What I found at the time -- and since, - is that prices vary hugely

(1) Camera & Camera - base price $1495

(2) Noel Leeming $1695

(3) Harvey Norman $1995

(4) Jacobs, Birkenhead $1495

That is a whopping 33% markup from the lowest to the highest. I am glad I shopped around. Rightly or wrongly I have been told that Nikon had dropped the price by $500 because of cheap competition from Sony etc. If that is correct then Harvey Norman are pocketing the difference. Whatever the story -- it certainly pays to compare prices !!

804786 2009-08-27 08:42:00 I get my SLR overseas despite the no warranty, the lenses you will fine are very expensive in NZ. A international benchmark - bhphotovideo.com they send to NZ but you will get taxed at border.

Other than that parallel import stores are not bad for phones unless someone can correct me and for computers they are not bad given we get parts and have those reputable and online stores.

804787 2009-08-27 08:50:00 Cameras have a wickedly short lifespan in the shop, Within 6 months they tend to be heavily discounted by the supplier, which means anything already in stock can be hundreds of dollars more expensive then one sourced specifically. Metla (12)

Interesting to know Metla. Will remember that for future use !!

Incidentally all the stores above had them in stock so presumably that wasn't a factor in this case. I did not look at Parallel Import stores as I wanted to have peace of mind should there be a problem with the item which needs attention. However Parallel Import stores would no doubt be cheaper again (which would make Harvey Norman price gigantic :waughh: )

804789 2009-08-27 09:24:00 That's all very well, but I was passing Jacobs only a couple of hours ago - - they may have heaps of cameras, oodles of telescopes and a mountain of binoculars, but do they have toasters? Pfffft. Not a solitary one to be seen.
How are we meant to trust a shop that doesn't have toasters? Goodness, they don't even advertise on TV !
Get that camera back, and hie yersel off over yon wee hill to the valley and see just how many toasters a real shop has. ;)
Don't worry about the overprice or the lack of knowledge there, they will assure you that they know best. Hey, Apples tend to be overpriced and above, look at the smugness they can guarantee.

804791 2009-08-27 09:59:00 Oh to be able to spend that amount of money on a camera. Hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of it. pine-o-cleen (2955)
804792 2009-08-27 10:07:00 I still have my D70 that I got in 2004 in Japan :D The improvements tend to be in ISO, you can wack it up and still pretty fine grain. That was $1,500 at the time, I have not upgraded since I don't use high ISO, I am a tripod still images kinda. Won a competition with it last year so pixels don't matter.... Nomad (952)

I was at work then Misty, (if you could call it work, not a fracas to be seen all night.) and work is just 250 yards down the hill from Jacobs, slightly past the fast growing library.

So the wine has to wait a bit, I just hope the extra aging won't put the price up too much.

Misty was trying to excuse your comments in the form of a joke.
