Let them out to do the groceries once a week |

| 804904 | 2009-09-01 00:21:00 | I actually liked the guy and had a couple of meals with him and later when the Nixon Library opened in Yorba Linda in July 19, 1990, I got an engraved invitation and attended . I was also one of his Naval "Side-Boys" for his Midway Peace Conference with President Thieu from VietNam in June 8th, 1969 . Years later on April 27, 1994, I also got another engraved invitation - but this time to his funeral in Yorba Linda, and the reception in that same library . WIKI IBID: Nixon was buried beside Pat on the grounds of the Nixon Library . He was survived by his two daughters, Tricia and Julie, and four grandchildren . [207] In keeping with his wishes, his funeral was not a state funeral, though his body did lie in repose in the Nixon Library lobby from April 26 to the morning of the funeral services . [210] Despite severe rain, police estimated that roughly 50,000 people waited in lines up to 18 hours to file past the casket and pay their respects . [211] We had a sorta neat association over the years, but not a buddy-type thing, after all he WAS a president! One thing he did for me was get me a "Red Phone" which was a "portable" radio-telephone in a very large case, brought to me by a Secret Service person while Nixon was on the Arly . He let me call my wife in California, whom I had not spoken with for over a year . I had hoped that this wasn't THE Red Phone and I dialed Khrushchev by accident . While we had those lunches, he and I talked about surfing (natch!) in San Clemente and that Trish had gotten him a surfboard for his birthday . I told him it was a great way to exercise and he should try it . He said he would, but was worried about the Marines patrolling the water around the Western White House on Avenida de Presedente . He said they chase people on surfboards away all the time and I spoke up telling him that they only wanted to surf "The Trestles" one of SoCal's better surfing beaches . We later had dessert together - he had been in the Navy and knew the protocol, but never had soft-serve ice cream on ship before . We had banana splits with lots of three flavors of ice cream, nuts, whipped cream and strawberry, crushed pineapple and chocolate sauce poured all over . He ate almost all of his, smiling a lot doing so . The next day he left for security reasons (another long story I can tell if anyone's interested) and went to another ship for the splashdown and to fool the Russian submarines and trawlers in the area who were dogging our moves for the past two or three days . I was surprised that he remembered me and sent me that inaugural invite to the library, but I had a good time and he picked me out of the line of people who were there and he had a picture taken of him and me together . I cannot find the original of the pix - not even one on the web . |
