805501 2009-08-30 23:02:00 Well I've got a Cobra lawnmower which I got from Mitre 10 Mega. About 2 months ago I noticed it wasn't going full speed even though the throttle was set to it. It cut the grass fine so I didn't pay too much attention to it then as it was winter and the mowing was only really done every 6 weeks or so.

Now with summer coming up she'll be in use a lot more. Thusfar I have checked the throttle cable etc as well as the the air filter. I also added some fuel injector cleaner to the petrol tank the other day but this hasn't help at all.

I have also checked the spark plug and it seems to be alright... no idea what i'm looking for but there is no corrosion or anything like that on the spark plug.

I may just replace that 1st... as it is most likely the cheapest option up front. Failing that I will take it to a mower centre or something I guess.

Anyone got some advice for this one please?

Cheers,

805502 2009-08-30 23:06:00 How old is it? If it's still under warranty, let Mitre10 sort it out. somebody (208)
805503 2009-08-30 23:11:00 Maybe the oil, if 4 stroke need replacing? Sometimes the chamber can get carbonized a bit, I use to strip and clean, and add a new compression ring, and adjust the points, in my earlier mowers. kahawai chaser (3545)

Cheers,

See if it has a mixture screw and give that a tweak in or out and see what happens.
Check with air filter off the butterfly valve is fully open at full throttle.
Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

805506 2009-09-01 00:22:00 I believe its a 2 stroke.
Mower is outside warranty period so no go there.
the throttle levelon the actual motor does go all the way to the "full throttle" position.

Oil seems to alright no problems there...

There doesn't seem to be a "mixture lever" anywhere that I can see.

I checked the air filter (a little yellow spongy thing) in the casing just above what I assume is the exhaust outlet... and it appears to be ok, I gave it a bit of a clean.

Thanks for all the help.

Will double check everything again and get back to you.

You either know that it's a 2 stroke or you don't ie if it is a 2 stroke you are adding oil to the petrol, if it has oil in the sump it is a 4 stroke.

Most of my mower problems usually trace back to dirt or water in the fuel blocking one of the carburettor jets.

805508 2009-09-01 00:52:00 IF this is a 2-cycle-----

2-cycles are so simple, but they have weaknesses.

Old gas?
Partially bridged spark plug gap from wrong type of premix oil?
Partially plugged exhaust
Wrong heat range on the plug?
Scored cylinder/piston from ash-generation from wrong oil?
Gasohol/Alcohol damaged carb diaphragm?
Lean fuel mixture? Danger as this can put a hole in the piston!
Cracked or pin-holed fuel supply clunk or line?

There might be a fuel filter on the bottom of the clunk too - good brands use them but I am not familiar with your Upsidedown land brands - well, not most of them!

Too rich and it will "four-cycle" and never get to high RPM, but "lean-sag" happens from lean mixtures - and also overheats critical parts!

Too much oil will make it lean too - don't be fooled! Too much oil displaces the gasoline and that makes the mixture lean - again heat danger.

There is a great difference in water-cooled engine oil requirements verses air-cooled engines. They take totally different premix oils with different attributes!

One-size-fit-all is NOT a good choice!

HOWEVER -----The throttle lever as you stated is not really the throttle on the carb on a lawn mower since they need constant speed control.

It usually has to go through a governor first before it gets to open the carb. You need to look at the CARB and see that it opens.

If you have a governor, then you likely don't have a 2-cycle.

805509 2009-09-01 00:54:00 Could the fuel injector cleaner be causing problems? convair (13650)

FI cleaner is basically alcohol and detergent and some colorant and is not a good idea in a small engine.
