806363 2009-09-02 12:11:00 It might be crazy, what are your thoughts.

I have visited Careers Services online.
Current I am a Business Analyst but I am not sure if I want to spend the rest of my life stuck in a office writing poetry reports all the time.

I have noticed that in the office there are lesser older workers who have not met the retirement age. I wonder where they gone. I know people who have chosen to be flight instructors, hairdressers, contractors, various advisors or in sales. Someone who got a business degree and went back to building. My ski instructor went to uni in the states and became a ski instructor which probably don't pay a lot.

A admin staff may have a salary of 50k. Which can be said quite high compared to other roles.

What are your views? Do people enjoy office roles or is it just that they are available and it pays good.

806364 2009-09-02 12:44:00 youl never have me working in an office, unless theres a keg beside my desk hueybot3000 (3646)
806365 2009-09-02 12:47:00 It depends.

In the event you look forward to going to work then it isn't WORK.

If you are happy in whatever vocation then do it.

On the other hand if you have a one million dollar mortgage then get a job that allows you to pay same.

Some people are happy digging ditches and others aren't.

806366 2009-09-02 14:52:00 An office job with client interaction is quite good I find. beeswax34 (63)
806367 2009-09-02 19:56:00 I have been a carpenter currently working as a joiner, it's been a good career but now my body is packing up, have back problems and a stuffed shoulder. The ski instructor you mentioned is probably footloose and fancy free, once they get a wife, kids etc then they will use the degree to get a real job unless of course they love living on no money.

I'm not looking for an office job would hate it I already know that, but I don't want to earn any less than I do now.

806368 2009-09-02 21:11:00 I have mostly always had an office job, except for occasions in between the office jobs. Barman in the UK, Confectionery in Welly with Dad and Painter with Dad here in Napier. The out doors is great except when its too hot or blardy miserable...I have an A/C office and really only report to the boss who is hardly ever here, plus I and get to leave early to play golf when possible....I'm happy! I work in a BA/IT manager role, and while there's a lot of things that annoy me about the role, I really like the variety of work . Maybe you should just consider a slight deviation in your career before you do a U-turn; look at other employers that have a slightly different focus on BA work, maybe do a bit of project management .

Changing careers completely isn't something I'd do at the moment, but when the job market picks up again, go for it - life's too short to spend 8 hours a day doing something you dislike .

I've got a plan to change career after I have a family and make cheese actually; reckon there's a niche market down here for what I'm planning! :o

806370 2009-09-02 21:17:00 Working in an office, hell just working inside would my idea of hell. I know someone who has been working the same job in the same room for 28 years. That's not living.

Rather be outside all winter then spend my life in a room.

Different strokes for different folks of course.

Yep :) I'll think about you next time it rains :clap My dads the same though loves the outdoors. I couldn't be a number cruncher or similar but I quite like doing IT work its not really like working so working in the office is fine in that situation.
