808448 2009-09-10 03:16:00 Hi guys

Been browsing these forums for a while but never decided to Join~

I'm fresh out of school, and have achieved L3 and UE, along with my national certificate computing L3. was wondering if anyone could suggest the best pathway to an IT career. Currently enjoying being the local fixity guy around the neighborhood, But i'm not the best person with study, though I will do it If I have to :punk Build my own PC's and love working with home theater and playing around with beta's and networks inside virtual pc's.

Or does anyone know what the best qualification to take up, or is there any apprenticeship or cadetship type opportunities for study + work?

Cheers

808449 2009-09-10 03:18:00 Where are you based?

Do you want an actual IT career (ie programming) or a career as a technician?

I'll go with the latter. If you are in Auckland, I would suggest the Manukau Institute of Technology. Diploma in Computer and Network Engineering. Or a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering.
It's mostly hands on, if you choose a networking major it will be all CCNA/CCNP for you. Best way to go if that's what you are into.

I'm in Napier at the moment, but would move anywhere really. Really just as a technician for now, I enjoy the job, and then could look at up skilling later.

808453 2009-09-10 03:27:00 Well, if you are keen to move then the world's open for ya.

There's Massey and all that Wellington has to offer.
But I would suggest not taking my advise and moving to Otara for MIT. Horrible place.

808454 2009-09-10 03:33:00 Since you have achieved your NCEA level 3 and UE you could try and attend university to do a computer science or a information systems degree. If not do your level 5 diploma in computing which would take you about a year maybe less since you have level 3 computing. Try and gain I.T industrial certifications such as comptia a+ n+ mcp mcts mcse mcsa ccna that stuff man forums12345 (15197)

Yeah have been looking into that, however, it isn't so easy, financial constraints for one, since almost all of the MCSE/MCSA courses that I have found aren't eligible for a student loan or anything, which was why I was looking for apprenticeship or cadetship to help pay the way ~~

Obviously going to have to slack through the three years of uni then huh?

808456 2009-09-10 04:03:00 Diplomas programs from polytechs usually have that in them. So if you go through them, not only do you get a piece of paper from the actual institution but also a lot of external ones too.
But nothing is easy or cheap for that matter. One paper costs about 4-500$ per semester that close to 4k a year. If you are part time, StudyLink will cover you course fees but nothing else.
