808219 2009-09-09 10:44:00 I think call centre roles are useful for some experience if not specific they are people skills etc. Even better if you can get a Telecommunications, IT or ISP call centre.

If you spent a few months at it, I would enrol in a course so you can tell employers you been proactive. But every night get jobs emailed to you and apply for it, I tend to have a std CV and a std letter but I change the first and maybe the last paragraph. Then you can easily flood out the emails.

Contact job agencies too and know what they do, some only do office support, some do finance, there are also some who does IT - I think one is called Absolute IT.

From my experience, you never know what the boss wants, when they advertise, the break out for me was that I applied for a job then I got it but it appeared the wanted to pay the person less that was probably how I got the job, at the time the job could of been 60k or more but they paid me $46k for the same job title but hey ...

My rule of thumb if 1 week no hear move on - from the date you contact agency or from the due date of a specific job deadline.

808220 2009-09-09 10:50:00 Another tip could be know someone out there like a school or charity who needs help in IT, you can do it for free maybe...

I came out of uni, first job was a call centre due to lack of experience, couldn't even get office assistant. In fact that was organised by Winz to work for one of the govt depts call centres when they hired the influx at peak times for some months. A number of those I know, some had IT qualifications just worked for a bank and then went into investment or eftpos sales or FX, some stayed at the govt call centres now for 5+ years.

Not during these times you aren't. Most of the graduates I know are scraping the barrel or temporarily back at home.

808223 2009-09-09 14:37:00 What is up with employers these days i mean i applied a lot and they all say that they received a large number of applications. WOWOW i guess a lot of people are out of jobs so they are either looking or studying. forums12345 (15197)
808224 2009-09-09 20:42:00 A lot of people are looking for work - it's that simple. As such, it means employers have a lot to choose from. You'll just have to keep trying - also, ask around people you know, family friends etc. to see if anyone has any leads (I have a few job leads in Wellington but the companies are looking for the best of the best).

What sort of call centre work do you want to do? They vary a lot - from market research work, to answering calls for specialist IT support and logging calls according to ITIL best practices. I know people who have worked for market research companies, which involved spending 4 hours a night ringing people to try to get them to take part in a survey. The experience/qualifications required are very low.

On the other hand, I know people who work at a small "call centre" logging support calls for a fairly large software package - they had a lot of training (most have degrees of some description in addition to some extensive on-the-job training) and are paid much better than other call centre staff.
