Yes, but it's a matter of will future employees take a polytech diploma over a degree?

Anyone who's in the industry in the moment, how did you get there? Uni, polytech, or just running your own business?

808460 2009-09-10 05:18:00 It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to do technical, hands on stuff (for example fixing computers, solving windows problems, network/server administrator, IT guy) I'd say polytech would be the way to go.

If you want to go on to do research then university.

If you want to program, I guess it doesn't matter whether you go to university or polytech (both cover this, but polytech would be cheaper). I don't know how they teach programming at polytech, but at university, they teach programming and concepts 1st year, then software development processes 2nd year and working in groups on a year long software project in the 3rd year.

I'm a software developer and I went as far as a masters degree. Most developers where I work have university degrees and almost all of the software architects have PhDs.

808461 2009-09-10 06:33:00 Hey,
I'm in the same kind of situation as you are. I finished Level 3 last year and am now taking a gap year, working one day a week as a computer technician at my old school (and being paid quite well ;) and the rest of the time just doing general work at a lab. I am wanting to get into Systems/Network Administration, and I'm going to do a Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences at AUT University starting next year. Just thought it might be useful for you to know what other people are doing.

808462 2009-09-10 07:09:00 Well you have to understand Industrial work experience counts a lot more than the paper you have. For a example you could go to polytech to do a 1 year diploma in computer systems and at the same time gain 1 or two I.T certifications. Then you could find a entry I.T level job and work your way up. So after 3 years you will have a computing diploma plus i.t certs plus 2 years of experience. Which is good if everything goes according to plan but you will never know what will happen in the future. Also if you do a 1 year diploma you could do 2 more years of study and gain a Bachelor degree which I think is awsome. How ever if you go to Uni you will have to do 3 years of study before you can gain a qualification (Bachelore degree) Most universities do not offer certifications while you do your degree. University degrees are more theoretical than Polytechnic stuff, polytechnic stuff are more hands on practical.

But in these hard economic time it is really really hard to find a entry level I.T position if you have zero years of expereince. Good thing you have some expereince being a nebour hood I.T tech you could use the people you helped as a referee.

808463 2009-09-10 22:40:00 Hmmm.. I suppose that's why they say polytech degrees are more 'applied'

THanks for all of your help :)

808465 2009-09-12 07:02:00 Since you have the National Certificate in Computing Level 3, I do not think that you need to spend 1 full year of doing the Level 5 diploma I think you can do 6 more months (half a year) and gain it. forums12345 (15197)
