Realistically,it is just a job to fill in the gap until you get your sandwiches unwrapped.
All the above comments are based on the service received in the past.
Anything else might represent a really vicious application of the "new broom" principle, but it would be a good, as well as a novel, idea.

808209 2009-09-09 08:27:00 You don't need any particular skills but as an employer they want some experience before they hand you a job esp the larger call centres. Supermarket after school jobs etc can be handy and things like if you worked at the citizens advice bureau or charity work, stuff like that.

You will find that the larger call centres will listen to your calls secretly and QA you and this can be used to determine how long you last if you are a temp employee, ie., many call centres hire people at peak times on temp contracts and then lay them off. If you made a mistake you will need to call them back and advise them properly.

Your performance is used in your performance management to see if you get bonuses in your salary or may even be a reduction if you don't perform after they work with you and provide you assistance or even ask to leave. Ie., how many calls you made, how long was the avg call, how accurate was your advice, did you ask the extra questions to better ascertain the customer's needs.

In terms of pay it is not a push over 2004 you may get paid $30k as a temp employee, perms maybe $26k, these days you should get least $38k, some may even offer $40 to near $45k.

Since you are always on the phone it is not everyone's job and that probably why there is a high turnover. Many people cannot work, call after call like a robot, no time to relax or say hi to your colleague. Once a call ends, the machine also answers the next call. However I have known some who have worked in call centres for over 10yrs.

But no specific experience is required, you could work for IRD, Social Welfare, a Internet ISP.

If you are wanting lesser skills then maybe Telemarketers.

808210 2009-09-09 08:38:00 I would say that employees piss customers off. It probably more the opposite.

You get bad callers like those who call in wanting to argue and use the f word continously, you get the odd one who tries to speak dirty to the female operator, you get those who call in and ask for what their computer have about them then they learn to abuse the system like social welfare, you get those who call in and say take the money off the old people and give it them and if you don't they say you have no sympathy.

But you also get those who have been abused by their partner gets a Housing NZ flat and then get the benefit and those who are in poverty they have to rely on food vouchers and food at the city mission or that they need to ask you before taking their child to the doctors.

808211 2009-09-09 08:47:00 Well, that is reassuring. R2x1 (4628)
808212 2009-09-09 09:11:00 In terms of training, you may get 3 or 4 weeks fulltime paid training. 1 or 2 week on the phones as a novice, but many customers are understanding if you let them know that is the case and if you put them on hold you get back to them and tell them you haven't forgotten about them and you are just checking with a senior colleague or a team leader. Have a look at "Support Analyst" positions in some of the bigger firms - EDS, Fujitsu, Unisys etc.

808215 2009-09-09 10:07:00 Yeah the Fujitsu one i saw. Did not apply though. As for eds datacom and unisys firms they all ask for previous work experience everyone does. I have being trying to land a I.T job for about 4 months now applied to like 25 jobs and they all got rejected. It is sad and depressing but I will not quit. forums12345 (15197)

808217 2009-09-09 10:31:00 Some professionals are working for free in the US while they are out hunting for a job so that they remain "fresh" and experienced when they do get a job offer.

Maybe you could try volunteering your computer skills while you are sitting and waiting for job offers to come by?

Just a thought here :)
