Commy was like commy Russia when a bus driver got the same as an airline pilot.

807661 2009-09-07 20:39:00 How about this for a radical (not really) thought.

If money motivates most people - an assumption, I know, but I think a valid one for most - then let's tax everyone the same percentage, no matter what they earn. The harder (smarter) they work, the more they make. Someone could then get three jobs and know that he/she wasn't going to pay in tax almost more than he/she made on the second and third job. There's a huge disincentive to extending yourself by getting secondary employment here in NZ - the tax on the second and subsequent job(s) makes it more worthwhile to sit back and do nothing.

A more radical thought would be to have no income tax, but a tax on spending (flat rate, say 25%) - everyone has to spend money to live, therefore the tax would keep rolling in (just have to jump hard on the black economy)...

That's a good idea - there are a lot of people who want to work harder (and smarter) to look after their families. People who run their own businesses would routinely work 60hrs a week, some people in lower income brackets would work several jobs (i.e. something during the day, cleaning at night) so they can provide a better standard of living for their families. Encouraging people to do that is a great idea, and has a side-effect of bringing in more tax income for the govt.

The danger of having a high GST is the impact on low income earners as food and power suddenly costs more, while their actual income doesn't change by a proportional amount. The only way you could do that is put an exemptions for "necessities of life" like food, power etc. but then things just get messy.

People like John Minto certainly provoke debate - it's just unfortunate that he seems to genuinely want to turn our country into North Korea.

He doesn't need to be taken out - that's the beauty of free speech - sensible people can figure out for themselves what ideas are good, and what ideas are bad. All he does is make himself look like an idiot.

Would you like to propose a better system?

807666 2009-09-07 21:53:00 :thanksLike i say,we can all dream. So in my dream i propose that taxes are abolished along with regulating governments.Take a step back to go forward.Use your skills in life to pay your way.In effect, i build something for you,you fix my teeth for me.Live in communities that look after each other and police each other according to their own rules.Greed is frowned upon and is a punishable offence. The biggest thing of all is to treat a fellow human being with the respect that you yourself expect to be treated.Easy. willowtheblue (15208)
