807471 2009-09-07 03:08:00 Yes yes, I exaggerated... You'd be lucky to find a second hand getrag for less than 8k. Hell R154s are going for 5k+. But surely a mazda auto box will be cheaper.

It would be cheaper still to import a half-cut than try and find such rare goodies here in NZ.

807472 2009-09-07 03:25:00 A new transmission might be cheaper than repairs. Look into it.
Mechanics would rather fix your box than get you a new one, more labor.

The only transmission I can think of that would cost as much/more would be the getrag from a supra (indestructible 6-speed awesomeness).

Yeah it's cheaper, but as I said in my second post, it's a factory issue with j-spec SP20's - buying a 2nd hand box could be fine & dandy.

Or it could cark it with the exact same issue 200 metres up the road from the trans specialist! :D

Not worth the punt IMHO!

Unfortunately - new transmissions also come wrapped in new cars .

Anything else is usually NOT new, but rebuilt .

There are a couple of exceptions in the US - like Ford F-Series trucks that have old Zundapp Folge Werke units made out of used Bickie Pegs (youse guys surprised that I knew that?) and they have zero-reliability .

Other than that and few more glaring examples where the manufacturer has built serious lemons, the only way to get a NEW transmission is buy it in a NEW car .

807474 2009-09-07 05:44:00 does anyone actually have any nz websites with prices of brand new auto gear boxes? lance4k (4644)
807475 2009-09-07 05:57:00 I didn't mean brand new. I meant from a wrecker or an importer (rebuilt).

I know with engines usually they give a 1 year or a 30,000km warranty.

SJ, you can get a new gearbox if you give getrag a ring :)

807476 2009-09-07 16:54:00 Like I said, there are exceptions - especially on the turkey units that can't make it off the original warranty .

The Getrags prove to be too weak for most US drivers as they cannot handle the power and torque of larger engines - which US drivers insist upon, nor do they seem to hold up for 10-15 hours straight driving time at 160KPH .

Driving that fast and long would only get you through the short side of most states here, and I typically drive for 20-25 hours at that speed to get to where I am going some times .

The driving needs and necessities here are much different that your island - although I kinda wish we only had as few inhabitants and drivers on the road as you .

But as a proving ground for reliability and capacity, the US is a good place to look and see what really holds up and doesn't need frequent overhauls, repairs or rebuilds .

"New" to some people means "new to them" and I understand that - but here it is a legally accepted point of argument that if a shop puts ONE rebuilt or refurbished part in a transmission, it is then considered totally and wholly rebuilt .

It's a mark of delineation that keeps fraud from being perpetrated .

Here's an extreme example: A very large company that manufactures mobile and RV-type homes (RV-trailers and motor homes, etc) cannot repair a tire that gets deflated by whatever reasons on the assembly line, because once it repairs or replaces a tire that was part of the original build, the whole unit becomes "used" and cannot be sold for new .

Tough laws for companies, but a great place to buy tires at the company store on Saturdays, when they unload everything that broke, went flat or had a chip in the surface paint and cannot be repaired, even if it was a tiny -teeny blemish .

They cannot afford the downgrade to "used" and would rather put a new part on if it means skinning the whole coach side or whatever, then making a paint touch-up or repairing a flat tire .

807477 2009-09-07 18:08:00 Getrags weak?!

That is the first time I have ever heard anyone say that.

There are plenty of Supras nearing or even crossing 1mW with factory V160s/V161s. I guess they must be rare in Americaland, but you guys have the Dodge Stealths or 3000GT or whatever you guys call them (we call them Mitsubishi GTOs here) plenty of them over 500kW too.

Or maybe getrag just sent the nice ones to the land of the (fake) rising sun. Ah well.

807478 2009-09-08 01:22:00 Auto transmissions I have always associated for some reason with hand grenades.
It seems they never perfected reliability into autos unlike manuals which from the late 1920s were made pretty bullet proof even with woman drivers.
They are complex and seem to do an exploding parts book picture of the components to themselves.
Was admiring a Ford Explorer (I love Fords) owner said they just spent the GDP of a third world country on fixing trans he said they are nick named Ford Exploders.

807479 2009-09-08 03:13:00 Exploders are capable of a few different ways to malfunction.

They spontaneously fall over on their sides and it's not uncommon to awaken in the AM, coffee in hand going out for the morning news paper and find your Exploder lying on it's side.

The Ford AXOD-E, the A4LD and the E4OD-E are all poor excuses for transmissions. I know - I've built scads of them. The latter likes to swell the torque converter so badly that it forces the crankshaft into the thrust bearing inside the engine and peels the bronze/tin bushing surface off it, destroying the engine too.

Yeah - the Getrags appear on the econo-boxes here, but they are not really safe or reliable going outside of the city limits.

I did not know that. As far as I knew they made the best 6-speeds in the market BMW M3s, M5, Audi S4s, 911s and the like.
