888686 2010-05-27 22:32:00 For the past couple of weeks I have received notification of a windows update (using automatic update) titled Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417). My operating system is Windows XP Pro with all service packs installed.

When I run the update it appearsto be installing, but then the shield icon comes back on the taskbar and wants to install again. No matter how many times I install and whether I do it automatically or manually its the same result.

I recently updated my antivirus Norton 360 to the latest version - could that have anything to do with the problem? I guess there have been other updates recently which have installed OK, so what's the problem with this one? Help!

888687 2010-05-27 22:41:00 Try what it says here (blog.komeil.com). Uninstall KB976569 install KB974417, and reinstall KB976569. I wouldnt be surprised about Nortons, it can cause a lot of probs Speedy Gonzales (78)
888688 2010-05-28 05:46:00 Thanks. However, I still can't get it to work. I have uninstalled KB976569, then tried to install KB974417. The icon still comes back to the task bar, but looking at updates in Control Panel/InstallRemove Programs it is listed as though it has been installed. Then I have downloaded and installed KB976569 which has installed fine, but again looking at Control Panel/InstallRemove Programs KB974417 has now disappeared. And, of course, the updates to install icon is still on the task bar! I disabled Norton while doing these things in case is was a problem but it made no difference.

Any other ideas?

888689 2010-05-28 05:51:00 You'll have to go through these (www.google.co.nz) Speedy Gonzales (78)
888690 2010-05-28 05:54:00 Start the PC in safe mode - go to C Drive, Windows - delete the softwaredistribution folder.

Restart PC normally, manually run windows update.

you have to delete it in safe mode, normal mode its locked and wont allow it.

One down side to deleting that folder is any previous update cant be uninstalled once deleted.
