A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline . A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year . So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year . They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons / year . That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil . 5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day's US consumption . And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl . So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million . How good a deal was that ??? "They'll probably do a better job with health care though!!" |

Anywhere from 75 to 400+ a day. This is far worse than cars. I think diesel is taxed in America? Here it ain't, provided they are kept off private roads. Kerosene jet fuel? I don't think it's as simple as cars. |

Too true some plonker with a business degree from harvard probably got his maths wrong like that mega plonker finance minister in last laber government sorry cant remember his name . He kept under estimating the tax take and never gave it back . |

| 809584 | 2009-09-13 03:28:00 | Go for it SJ :p With shopping discounts I can get diesel for under $0.86. But I gotta pay tax per KM driven. Still a lot cheaper than petrol. About 40$ per 1000km cheaper than petrol. |

| 809585 | 2009-09-13 09:43:00 | Take in road tax and diesel engine repairs you would be suprised how petrol engines are almost the same price to run. | prefect (6291) | ||
| 809586 | 2009-09-13 12:02:00 | Petrol is much kinder to the neighbours too. I have never really learned to enthuse over the rattly knocking of a diesel warming up interminably on a frosty morning. Still, they sound better than they smell. | R2x1 (4628) | ||
| 809587 | 2009-09-13 12:12:00 | I dunno, the issue clearly isn't saving money, oh no we're going to make less back than we spent. They're a government, they'll get money from other sources, somethings don't have to be profitable. They're clearly trying to save the envrionment/be a cleaner bunch of folk. Even though the lowest MPG allowed is ****ing light years behind europe.. Come on china, join the bandwagon, make your people healthier, your air clean! |

| 809589 | 2009-09-13 14:29:00 | It's too early in the AM here Sunday morning to compute the price differences to NZD, but our gasoline is $3.099/USG and the diesel OTR (Over The Road) is $3149/USG. We advertise our fuels with that 9/10ths on the end so everyone thinks it doesn't cost the next penny. It's psychological warfare. They look like this on the signs: $3.09 9/10, which is really $3.10 if you think about it. |
