809001 2009-09-11 08:27:00 vote for removal of those new annoying press f1 ads on the poll above!!!! I hope the Admin notices how much people want them removed, and removes them Sting Ray (15196)
809002 2009-09-11 08:32:00 Silly poll I think. We all want the ads gone but that's not realistic.

Rather we should be asking that they not make them so incredibly obnoxious and obtrusive.

809004 2009-09-11 08:56:00 I don't mind the ad's, just leave them where they were :dogeye:. davidmmac (4619)
809005 2009-09-11 08:58:00 Instead of ads, would you be willing to pay a fee to PCWorld to use the forums instead? I.e. if you pay a fee, you don't see ads. If you don't pay, you see ads. Both ways, the site owner (in this case Fairfax) can partially recover the costs of web hosting, maintenance etc.

Edit: Alternatively, verified subscribers to PCWorld magazine get an ad-free forum environment, while everyone else is served ads?

809009 2009-09-11 09:46:00 Ads are commonplace on the Internet particularly for Google Adsense, but don't millions of us use Google Search and their huge range of popular free programs? It's estimated Google keeps about 80% of ad revenue, which I guess helps drive their empire to benefit millions of people online.

For press F1, they provide a benefit to help out not only to members, but also indirectly to dozens of others on the Internet - as I have seen daily PF1 stats on my sites from worldwide visitors. Thus income through ad clicks (voluntary) from such visitors to PF1 might be seen as a bonus. Not much more, and certainly not a direct payment scheme - as I have seen in other technical sites. Maybe they could perhaps reduce the layout size for optimization with minimal appearance, or advertise with Adsense themselves on other related sites (if not already), but this costs within the Google AdWords program.
