How hard is this to understand? He got life imprisonment but can be considered for Parole after 18 years have passed. If you can't work out that isn't 2016 then buy a calculator.

If I recall correctly, life meant seven years non-parole in the 80's, went up to ten years in the 90's and this minimum non-parole thing started fairly recently. So sentencing for murder has got longer consistently over the last twenty or so years, I can't recall any occasion where a law has reduced the time for life over that period.

Length of sentences has therefore consistently increased over last twenty years and it doesn't appear to have reduced the murder rate. Longer sentences if anything seem to increase the murder rate, and in the US where they have the death sentence they have a much higher murder rate than here.

So historically speaking anyway, that was one of the toughest sentences handed down in New Zealand since the death penalty was abolished.

Too true the liberals will get him out early, they always do. There is a huge network helping prisoners and almost zero help for victims.
The sentence was an insult to the victim, the victims dont seem to matter to judges.

I can only hope that you are correct on this.
Time will tell but I also think I may not live to be 85 or so to see for sure.

The way I see it: 2009 + 18 years = 2027

Yeah right a huge network - maybe these liberals will storm the prison and get him out. He is in on a life sentence, he won't be out this side of 2030 even if he is a saint in prison. No one helping vicitims? What planet have you been on lately.
