| 810201 | 2009-09-14 22:24:00 | As Wellington hospital staff battled to save Michelle Paterson's unborn child, thieves snuck into her hospital room and stole her laptop. She lost irreplacable family photos of her four other children, photos of her baby bump, and work information from her job as a youth worker. "I'm absolutely horrified, just gutted. We're a big family and we've got no house insurance." Ms Paterson, who is 34 weeks pregnant, had been in hospital for a week due to complications in her pregnancy when she went into emergency labour last Tuesday. As she was rushed from her pre-natal bed to the labour suite, she had time to grab her bag with her cellphone, but little else. "It all happened quite quickly," she said. Right. So she needed her phone whil giving birth, apparently she needed a laptop too. And the moron doesn't have insurance either???? |

| 810203 | 2009-09-14 22:32:00 | So no backups, and no insurance. Hate to say serves you right in this situation, but...well... it does! When will people learn. :waughh: | wratterus (105) | ||

If you can afford to pop out another baby, you can afford a few bucks for a CD or a Thumbdrive... Sure, she'd been in hospital for a week, and so you can't blame her for wanting to be entertained, but everybody knows what happens to unattended goods. It's just a series of unfortunate events. |

That one picture you took while away from home etc. Even if you went back to try it again you will not have the same conditions at the same place. Each sunset is different even if you remain in the same place for years. But as pctek explains in her sig us blokes just have to get used to the idea that Women can do as they like as can Cats. Presumably she chose not to store copies elsewhere. |

Everywhere you go in England you are on CCTV  And the original post does say that she lost "irreplaceable" data so I take that as meaning that there are no backups. I do feel sorry for her due to her particular circumstances but anyone who doesn't do a backup of any important data will usually get no sympathy from me. Another example is the business just up the road, who also got broken into over the weekend, who had a laptop stolen. They said there wasn't too much data on there that mattered but they also said that if their other laptop had been taken they would be screwed. We are now putting together a system for them to do automatic backups. |

I think you will find that its meaning is the data cannot be reassembled, rewritten or the like (photos, family videos), not necessarily not backed up, well, thats what I get out of it anyway! |

| 810209 | 2009-09-15 00:28:00 | Having been there in the weekend, there are signs everywhere that tell you to keep your valuables with you at all times. There are thieves operating. The problem is that none of the doors are locked. What it really needs is having a partner there to pick everything up before leaving. |

Yea it is sad that you have to keep a good eye on your stuff while in hospital. Last year when my wife was in the Whangarei hospital for my son's birth we were told not to leave stuff unattended especially cell phones or cameras. |
