811429 2009-09-17 23:24:00 I'm looking to buy a new washing machine cos my old one is about 7yrs old and starting to make screeching noises. I went to LV martin yesterday and the sales guy told me to get a front loader as it is more energy and water efficient compared to the top loader. I have used a top loader all my life, and kinda anxious to get the front loader. Need some opinions please whellington (15030)
811430 2009-09-17 23:30:00 You have to bend over more to to use them. IMO that's enough reason to get a top loader. :p

The front loaders are probably a bit cheaper to run, but the ease of use of a top loader would far outweigh that I'd think.

811431 2009-09-17 23:32:00 We have always had a top loader, however i have heard repeatedly that front loaders are better etc, and as for the bending down thing, bolt it on to the top of a small cabinet or something Morgenmuffel (187)
811432 2009-09-17 23:35:00 The sales guy said they are trying to convince NZers to use the front loader for the reasons above. He said they are common in the US and China whellington (15030)
811433 2009-09-17 23:37:00 Get a top loader, don't have to bend over to get the clothes out of the machine. convair (13650)

Its a unnecessary design error.

You don't bend over to use them, you bend your knees silly. What about using your oven you have to bend to use that don't you. Also you still have to bend
with a top loader to reach that last sock stuck in the bottom. Front loaders
are better all round and everyone in the UK uses them.

If the washer body is not made of stainless steel, but just stove enamelled mild steel, it eventually rusts around the bottom of the window area. The seal can also fail when the machine gets old.

Perhaps the machines are designed to fail in other ways before the door goes.

We had an Italian Indesit we brought to NZ, it lasted about 8 years before it started to rust through. I applied rust kill and several paint layers, but in the end it went to the tip.

At that time the Champion front loader sold in NZ was an Indesit made under licence.

Edit: The biggest draw back to a front loader is when the wash cycle does fail and you are left with a machine full of clothes and water. You have no option then but to open the door and get a flood all over your feet :) :)
