810904 2009-09-17 03:42:00 Foxconn are possibly alright, except for the ones I have encountered which had ceased to suck, or do anything else. I believe they do have an excellent mark-up though. R2x1 (4628)
810905 2009-09-17 04:12:00 Why would Foxconn manufacturer to major companies like Sony, Microsof, Motorolla, and HP if they made crap mobos whellington (15030)
810906 2009-09-17 04:17:00 Sony Vaios are some of the most unreliable notebooks on the market today. Foxconn/ECS make boards for HP/Compaq, mainly Compaq. Compaq PCs and notebooks also have a higher than average failure rate.

I'm pretty sure the higher end proper branded HP notebooks have different boards than the cheaper ones, or at least boards of a higher quality.

Again, just because something is made in a massive quantity and a lot of companies use them doesn't mean anything. They are widely used cause they are cheap. Generally designed to last the warranty period and no more.

Not sure if we really get their whole range either in NZ. They probably ship the crap to us.

810907 2009-09-17 04:25:00 Foxconn are very big and popular in the States...perhaps we only get the budget bottom of the barrel boards here?! SolMiester (139)

I realise you are talking about complete equipment, and it is often designed down to a price, not up to a standard, however the statement above is a common myth, but unfounded. Most electronic components have a projected life expectancy in 1000's of hours, but some types last longer than others. Electrolytic capacitors have the shortest lifespan but it all depends on their circuit function and duty cycle.

I have vintage electronic equipment here with electrolytics 60+ years old working at 350 volts but still functioning to spec, while caps in high frequency and high filtering current roles may last 10+ years in a well cooled piece of equipment or 2 years in a poorly ventilated (or ventilation obstructed by user) item. In my experience only the el-cheapo caps die young, and they are usually found in el-cheapo disposable equipment.

The disappointment of short product life lingers long after the warm glow produced by the cheap price has faded.

Cheers

Most PC "manufacturers" aren't. They buy components from various companies and then have someone else assemble them then flog them off with their label on it.

It's often a tender process. Guess who generally wins? The best deal that week.

Not who-ever makes the best.

Foxconn used to be sold by Legend when they still existed in NZ, I can tell you even they admitted the failure rate was huge.

PSU manufacturers: design your PSUs so that the capacitors aren't all jammed in a corner under a ton of wiring where they get no airflow. Also, use proper ones like Rubycons (none of this Fuhjyyu crap - I'm looking at you, Antec)
