2009-09-15 23:45:00 | Nice website, I can see the phone number on the home page (twice) Only it's different in each case!! On a more positive note, try to set up relationships with other businesses (hairdressers etc) where you can have cards, leaflets etc promoting each other.

2009-09-16 05:40:00 | Disclaimer: I've never had a manicure in my life (Journalism's not conducive to fingernails) & I'm unlikely to aim for glamorous hands by now... BUT - I know what makes me consider trying out a new business of any kind. It comes down to words like Opening Special, Half-price Trial, Win a Free Manicure etc. We all know word of mouth is the best recommendation, but you need starter customers to get that. This is a luxury field. Ms Average is unlikely to try a "high-priced unknown" without a reason. As wedding & balls invitations don't come along every day, she needs a nudge. And the prospect of getting something posh at a cheaper-than-usual price is a good nudge. And if she might be the lucky xxxth customer who wins a free treatment, that's an even better one. (Think of it as the equivalent of IT working for nothing to get started) Also - Relationships with other businesses, as Miami Steve mentioned, apart from hairdressers - Who sells wedding gowns in your town & surrounding? Where do teenagers get their outfits for school formals? Products - I'd like to see some wacky nails in the pix gallery. And more colours. Too many similar there, especially if you want young trendies. Too many similar pix of the studio also. Enlarge the one of Donna & drop 2 or 4. But that's getting into a critique of the website itself, which I see isn't actually what you're asking for, so will leave it at that...

Dunno about others but if I get an answering machine or one of those painfull automated systems I'll hang up straight away. I always prefer to talk to a real person, maybe transfering calls to a cell phone could be a better option? As plod said those vehicle magnets (or good vehicle signwritting) are a great way to advertise.. |

2009-09-16 06:06:00 | Prices are sharpest in town, But we aren't in a position to give away the service. There is cost associated with each service not just time. Relationships with other businesses is a tricky one,In general it doesn't work unless you already have the network in place, If the hair dresser doesn't know you personally then there is next to no chance they will allow your advertising in their store, They are quite aware that if your approaching them out of the blue then they are not the only ones, so their chances of getting return business is slim. Likewise other stores, They get aproached all the time by other companies wishing to target their customers and they generally wont allow it unless their is already a relationship in place (meaning you know them personally). We have brochures and cards in the hair salon that the wife gets her hair done in. Wedding/ball season creates a huge demand around town, Provided we can get the profile of the business raised then she should get her share, If anything the prices should go up. Donna has been doing this for a number of years as an employee for a high profile local salon and is professionally trained. Young trendies aren't really the target market for the nails but more nail art will definitely be making its way into the gallery.

2009-09-16 06:08:00 | All I will say is one thing - BNI. We tried everything when we started our business almost 3 years ago, radio, newspaper, yellowpages, free local mags and papers etc etc. About a year ago now we were asked to go along to the local BNI chapter meeting and haven't looked back since. There is a chapter in Wanganui (www.bni.co.nz) so I would send your wife along to check it out. You can usually go to two meetings as a visitor before you have to decide if you will join or not. I was a bit sceptical when I first went along but it has turned out to be the best way to get the business known around town and get referrals.
