1106332 2010-06-03 00:37:00 Hi, You sometimes might remember a Thread on my WD 500GB Extnl HD stuffed up and me running helter-skelter to get it right! Good news is that I'm successful in getting most of the key data (docs, pics and personal videos etc) back. I used Restorer Ultimate Pro (around $52 Canadian). Thanks to all your help, support and follow ups. This programme is not user-friendly (in a beginner's perspective) but helpful. namboothiri (14469)

I use File Scavenger myself, seems user friendly enough. Never heard of the one you used though.

1106334 2010-06-03 03:06:00 did free programs like recover not work? Roger Hunt (13648)
1106335 2010-06-03 04:19:00 Hi, thanks. It seems, there are hundreds of them! So the choosing was random. Tried Handy Recovery and one from EASUS. Both are around US$70 but I wasn't convinced. EASUS has a volume-limited free tool. Bumped into Restorer Demo that showed all the files' images. So bought it straight away.

Of course, tried 'Recuva' but it was nowhere near the task. It is very limited in application, I suppose and couldn't find any reviews either on its efficiency or what it could do in my scenario.

1106336 2010-06-03 05:15:00 I tried Recuva once too, not very good.

I think it may be like Norton Undelete, it must be installed before you delete something, to keep track of it...

1106337 2010-06-03 05:54:00 Hi nam*. Sounds like a great investment.... I used Restorer Ultimate Pro (around $52 Canadian). .... to recover all of you docs, pics and videos. Well done and thanks for the heads-up. Scouse (83)
1106338 2010-06-03 13:28:00 Certainly Scouse but not in terms of money. The stress, endless time, anxiety and so on! namboothiri (14469)
1106339 2010-06-03 23:02:00 Hi fascinated by Agent 24's reference to File Scavanger, I gave it a go yesterday and eventually bought that too! What a waste of money... indeed! Whatever be their motives, they help we frustrated unfortunates and that motivates me.

There are many commonalities between RestorerUPro and FS. With file types, we've options in FS but not in RUP. It takes all in one go that last(ed)s about 4-5Hrs for a 500GB Drive to scan. But I found FS taking over 4Hrs just for scanning Word docs plus recovery although small. So there is a time lag in the scanning between the two, probably RUP more faster than FS.

Another one is RUP shows the whole file trees and they are recovered and saved in their original names. However, FS shows the Trees but when saved, they are all in a bunch to choose. This I found very difficult to do. Looks like spending another few more days to do.

However, there is a plus point with FS. RUP has bugs not yet fixed. I had it two times stalling/not responding while clicking as normal. It put me back to On Your Marks! A very frustrating time. But FS never ever had one in my three trials so far done. Ease of use? Definitely FS. Thanks.

1106340 2010-06-03 23:45:00 File scavenger is slower I think because it searches for *everything* and then filters the results based on your file extension choice.

Of course it's still not bad, you still get to see only the files with the extension you chose, so that you can easily sort through them.

File Scavenger can save to the original folder (unless the folder path was lost\unknown) then it will recover them to "Unknown"

You must click the "Use Folder Names" checkbox on the recovery tab under the dropdown where you choose the destination folder.

1106341 2010-06-04 04:09:00 I agree Agent_24. Yes, I have found the Option in the pic just now that was missed before! namboothiri (14469)
