1106352 2010-06-02 11:30:00 Hi, I am currently running a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 700m with Pentium M, 496MB RAM, and a 37 Gb HDD .

Even though this computer is old and slow, it ran without any problems for the good 4 and a half of years that I have had this . Recently, I have been starting to get some problems .

After using my laptop for about an hour(or less if I'm watching a video, or stressing my internet), My start menu freezes and as a result the whole system freezes . I can't open any files, nor can I save any unsaved files .
As a B student in Auckland Grammar, I get extremely angry when this happens in the middle of an essay, and I can't save it .

I've tried adding virtual RAM, now at 7Gbs max 4Gbs min but that didn't do much help .

One thing i've noticed recently is that this laptop gets extremely hot after a couple of minutes . About 4 months ago, right before the problem occurred, my laptop started shooting out balls of silica gel . Maybe that is clogging the fan . . .
But my fan doesn't look like in any state of damage . . .

I am eager to fix this problem, Please help me .

Thanks

1106353 2010-06-02 11:48:00 Not a good idea changing the virtual memory to 4GB / 7 GB. Since it uses the hdd, (for virtual memory - its NOT real memory), and that will SLOW you right down. If you want more ram, buy some real ram and install it (if it still exists) Speedy Gonzales (78)

So what do you suggest me to do about this problem?

1106355 2010-06-02 12:01:00 If it can take more memory buy some. Do you know how much memory you can put in it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1106356 2010-06-02 12:05:00 There's only one slot but the RAM's only available in USA...

Do you think the computer crashing is because of a virus or just the memory causing problems?

1106357 2010-06-02 12:06:00 You can post a hijackthis log, the program is below in my sig. Install then run it. Then click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste the log here. We'll see whats in it

What version of windows is on it?

1106358 2010-06-02 12:08:00 I run on Win XP Pro... But HijackThis won't work... (Conficker virus causing problems) is there another mirror site? sunjae429 (15805)
1106359 2010-06-02 12:09:00 So, you have conficker? Boot into safe mode / networking then try it. Where in Auckland are you Sunjae? Have you installed a virus scanner?

Get this (www.simplysupersoft.com) <- direct link in safe mode / networking. Update it then click on scan. Then select all options under the utils menu

1106360 2010-06-02 12:13:00 I live in Remuera, and I do have a virus scanner, but the conficker seems to shut it down everytime I open it. sunjae429 (15805)
1106361 2010-06-02 12:14:00 Hmm ok get the file in the link I gave above. Boot into safe mode / networking first. I'm in Mt Eden. If you could get teamviewer (www.teamviewer.com) <- direct link I could log in remotely from here (if it works), and check it out. Are you on broadband? Speedy Gonzales (78)
