1105696 2010-06-01 08:48:00 I have been an Xtra customer for years now except for a period some time back with Paradise.

Am just signing up for their "Total Home Lite", which is $80 for landline and broadband and other bits and pieces.

Now my query is - the possible terms are 12 or 24 months. If I sign up for 24 months then I get a free Thomson modem. I have an existing D-Link G604T, which is ADSL2 compatible and works pretty well. The seller from Telecom says that the Thomson modem TG585 is more modern and we would get faster internet as a result. That seems quite likely, but is he correct please ?

Their description of the modem is here -

www.telecom.co.nz

Please advise if you can - would I get better speeds
Thanks
Misty

1105697 2010-06-01 08:53:00 Try both you'll soon find out. Altho the Thomson doesnt have Ethernet ports like the Dlink does it? Is the plan ADSL2? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1105698 2010-06-01 09:34:00 Yehp, it will be faste, marginaly only, BUT youl use less broadband due to the better design of the thompson, and the thompson wears out less. I use a thompson at the moment, just switched from a d-link. they are horrible little modems, lmewire was alot faster in the region of 50kb per download. from 102kb avg Mr_Olympia (7727)

Hi Speedy
Yes, the plan is definitely ADSL2. Would be surprised if the Thomson didn't have Ethernet ports - I will have to check on that !!

Are you saying that the D-Link were "horrible little modems" ?? - just checking to make sure I have picked that up. They are small !

and that
limewire was faster with D-Link ?

Depending on the model, I know one of them has only got 1 port (that connects to the NIC), not 4. So, you wont be able to connect anything else to it. Unless you buy a separate switch

Hi Speedy
It's the TG585, the better of the two.
So that should be okay ?
Cheers

1105703 2010-06-01 10:21:00 I have no idea how good thomson modems are. I've got the other modem you've got. But, I'm not on a ADSL2 plan. Dont have any idea which one would be faster for limewire. I dont use P2P programs Speedy Gonzales (78)
