812168 2009-09-20 21:06:00 Just watched a program where the Chinese are converting coal to oil and other bi-products.
Roughly at this stage they can produce a barrel of oil for $40.

Would have thought the Germans or yanks would have been on to that,as there is unlimited supplies of coal.

812169 2009-09-20 22:02:00 The Germans did a lot of coal to oil production during WWII as they could not import oil because of the Allied blockade and their usual supplies from Roumania were destroyed.
You all probably know that NZ has huge reserves of coal in the SI - admittedly most of it is is poor quality brown coal, but still.
$40 a barrel sounds good, but using Western Wages and Labour laws and land prices and RMA etc and OSH would probably cost 3 times that !
This is probably what National is on about with the conservation land. If we did do it it would create jobs and reduce our huge import bill.

I am referring to Osh etc.

812172 2009-09-20 23:14:00 It is about as economically sustainable as gas to gasoline, and we know what a great success that was. Obviously, if the blue brigade see another chance to rort the taxpayers, stand by for "Think Big - 21st Century".

Probably unimportant about pollution, what does the SI matter to Wellington? They have wind to take care of that.

I agree with you but unfortunately no party is going to do that, it would make them look bad

Seems the Chinese wash out pollutants somehow.
