811938 2009-09-19 20:44:00 An outlaw biker gang got subway'd on the highway and several people are in poor condition yet .

"Subway" is when a driver slams on the brakes and tries to cause someone to rear-end them . It's mean and if it can be proven, the person who hit the brakes can be held accountable .

WILSONVILLE, Ore . – An accident involving almost 30 motorcycles just south of Wilsonville on Interstate 5 Friday afternoon injured several people, two critically .

The crash happened at about 3 p . m . near milepost 282 . LifeFlight airlifted Herbert Sinclair of Heyburn, Idaho and David Bowyer of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Oregon Health Sciences University and Legacy Emanuel Hospital, respectively . Both were motorcyclists .

Representatives of Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue said that it treated eight patients for shoulder and hip injuries and broken bones . They were also taken to area hospitals .

The accident closed northbound lanes of Interstate 5 for over two hours .

The motorcyclists were part of a local motorcycle club called Brothers Speed which was established in May 1969, according to its Web site (http://www . brotherspeedmcoregon . com/) . It has chapters in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, specifically in Portland, Ore . Camas, Wash . , and Boise, Idaho .

Oregon State Police said the motorcyclists were riding in standard formation – two columns – when traffic ahead slowed suddenly . The two lead motorcyclists were able to avoid a collision by maneuvering clear of the stopped traffic, but the rest of the motorcyclists could not stop in time, causing a chain-reaction of crashes with the rest of the group .

A witness to the crash, Terry Scott, said he and his girlfriend were driving northbound from Salem behind the motorcycles when he witnessed an SUV, that was driving in front of the group of motorcycles, suddenly slam on its brakes .

811940 2009-09-19 21:40:00 I had this absolute moron in front of me deliberately hit the brakes on the motorway while doing 90 Km/hr. :groan:

I managed to avoid her, but the fact she had a van load of kids aboard didn't seem to stop such stupid behaviour. What triggered it was I had pulled in front of her (safely) earlier and she much have taken exception to something about that.

I would love to know what goes on in a persons head that they can't see the consequences of such immature behaviour. It could have injured or killed people.

I'd be more afraid of the the biker gang's retribution than the long arm of the law .

I don't know about the US, but here if you are following so close or travelling so fast that you can't stop without hitting the vehicle in front, it is in part your fault as well. It is easy to get carried away and lay 100% blame on the instigator, but conveniently forget contributory negligence by the victims.

Sympathy for the injuries, but idiots abound everywhere and it strikes me that regardless of the actions of the idiot in the vehicle up front, the bikers were going too damned fast and riding in a bunch. Round here we call it the concertina effect.

Cheers

811944 2009-09-20 20:37:00 The motorcycles first:

"Outlaw" is the operative word here . These bikers don't normally have front brakes on their bikes as a statement of them being macho . It's a rite of passage and if they survive the roadtest they rise rapidly to the rank of Club President .

Oregon is also a very wet state with drizzle almost every day if not downright pouring rain . I don't know if precipitation was a factor, but "capturing" someone on your rear bumper for fun or meanness is not legal and if it's proven is a criminal action warranting a felony charge and incarceration .

The report stated that witnesses saw the van stop or slow rapidly - that might be a reason for further investigation .

Most bikers travel too close to each other too when they run and that is likely one of the biggest factors of them all biting the big one .

So - combine (prolly) wet roads, a driver with a case of the jaws for bikers and bikers with no front brakes . The results can be manifold . Speed is usually not a problem for HDs so we can rule that out .

I am not sure if Oregon requires helmets on motorcycle drivers and passengers or not - they might be an option, but they are required on a person under 18-years of age .

As far as following too closely - YES if you run into the rear of someone, it is USUALLY the fault of the hit-ee, not the hit-ed .

The biggest problem is that if everyone observed the "1 car length for every 10 MPH" space rule, the freeways would always be theoretically overfull and some people would still be in their driveway waiting for a chance to get on at the end of the line .

Anyway - if you try to keep the required space, four vehicles will pull into the that spot and you will move backwards and never get to your destination .

One strange thing that happens is "coiling" or "The Freeway Wave" which is NOT the same as The California Wave .

If some do-gooders or tourists from South Dakota or Australia try to keep the spaces they feel comfortable with, the lines of traffic will first accelerate and then slow to accommodate the person trying to keep that open area and the whole line gets set into a motion (a physical phenomenon) that has some people stopping as others right in front of them accelerating .

It's like a horizontal version of a whip and causes lost time, gas and brakes and seriously disrupts the professional drivers getting to/from work or home .

What isn't needed is someone who is trying to be lawful at the expense of everyone else from their inattention to the needs of the greater number .
