811862 2009-09-19 06:45:00 The US is REPORTING record levels of unemployment, but California is leading the pack and the California County of Riverside, where I live - is the armpit of the rates.

Here's the article, then I'll tell you what it REALLY means:

RIVERSIDE - Riverside County's unemployment rate reached 15 percent in August, which is the highest since at least 1990, when the current method of computing the jobless rate began, state officials reported today.

August unemployment was just one-tenth of a percentage point higher than in July, but more than 33 percent higher than in August 2008, when the county's jobless rate was 9.7 percent, according to the California Economic Development Department.

The 15 percent jobless rate, which is preliminary, is the highest since at least 1990, and earlier rates aren't comparable because they were calculated differently, according to EDD.

See that part about "current method of computing"? Translated from political garbage-ese to human terms, this means that since people who are still unemployed but have exhausted their unemployment insurance and still have no work - are NO LONGER ON THE LIST!

California gives unemployed persons just 13 weeks of unemployment insurance for their whole lives. Not per quarter - not per year - not per 6-months period - FOR THE REST OF THEIR WHOLE WORKING LIVES!

You can use any part or all of it in one swell foop - but you only get 13 weeks total.

Then once exhausted, you aren't counted any more. Nice?

The real unemployed rate is really around 55-60% right now.

Well if you had lived here you can be on a benefit for years. Some people make it a career choice.

811867 2009-09-19 07:36:00 They are small - mostly thoracic-looking long-waisted insects that eat your woolens and silk in the closet. I know all about them.

Get on with the swearing in ceremonies Mate!

811869 2009-09-19 08:00:00 Well you are in then.Meaning the other team is out, so you go out until you're out, then you can come in.

PS. There are a lot more crickets in the cupboard than out proving themselves to be a bit loose in the marbles on the pitch.
