'You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning. 'You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride. 'You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job. 'You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of criminal and antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams. 'You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card. 'You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps and welfare? We used to here in the US, but by Supreme Court Decree in the mid '60s, it was outlawed and the teachers - although they themselves may not want to pray or have prayer in classes, have to put up with all the abuse and death threats they receive on a daily basis . The very thought of a teacher going into that battle field is fraught with horrors and this teacher was making a comment that if she has to go so-unarmed, why cannot she utter a prayer at least for her own safe day at the desk . The thing most foreign countries forget is that the Creed recited in the first class in the morning (Home Room or First Period) had the American students stand and mouth The Pledge of Allegiance, which had in the verses: " . . . one nation, under God" as part of the rote chant . Certain civil-libertarians won court decisions - good or bad - about this phrase and also had prayer - silent or spoken - removed from the schools and any reference to praying silently and illegally has been met not without some high amount of controversy . The teachers are lamenting the modern and "enlightened" quasi-legal legislated choices (and now even their own choices of a vocation) as they experience more and more teacher-hate, mayhem and threats of injury by and from the very students that they proctor: they recognize the total loss of decent family values and the current dysfunctional studentship . We have sent our son to a Catholic school, It troubles me deeply to see and hear what they are filling his head with, I hope he forgives me.	Metla (12)
