812082 2009-09-21 00:26:00 +1 for both Billy_T's thoughts, and Metlas.

Unfortunately those who don't care, don't care, and should be shot in one foot with a nailgun so they have to walk around in circles ...
Seriously now though, I know people who've had their license taken from them for drink-driving, and as far as they're concerned it just means next time they're caught they're done for driving without a license also :(

Maybe (repeated) drink driving is another crime to add to the car-crushing list?

812083 2009-09-21 00:41:00 There are far too many who don't care if they're caught or not.
They also don't care if they have a licence
They all care about their means of transportation
Take the car off them. No other penalty will hurt as much.

812084 2009-09-21 01:39:00 Start charging all deaths on the road as manslaughter, and murder if they deliberately put people at risk, Like driving on the wrong side of the road, passing in dangerous circumstances.

The folly is in thinking that taxing people on the side of teh road for small/specific indiscretions is going to mean anything, Standards right across the board need to be raised.

I still believe that everyone should be barred from driving a car until doing two or three years on a low cost under-powered motorcycle. It will teach situational awaerness to those that can learn, and take some skin off those who can't, before they are in a position to kill others with a 2 ton vehicle.

812086 2009-09-21 05:45:00 The people who already ensure they stay under the limit will adjust, Those that can't figure it out or take their chances with a glass of beer may get busted. Those that don't care will still not care and do as they see fit. Perhaps it may reduce the amount of people busted as a zero limit is easy to follow, The drunk drivers will still be drunk, and driving, and killing when they stuff it up.

I'm with Metla here, changing the limits or winding up the penalties won't stop recidivist drink drivers, they'll just keep on driving because once drunk they either don't remember or don't care. Not even the threat of a life sentence in jail will stop the recidivists in the US. Virtually any prison sentence in the US for DUI is a life sentence anyway, because Mr Joe Average ends up in Jail with the really bad guys and that is likely to give them a case of Arse-Injected Death Sentence. Some fear this so much that they even sell their homes or businesses to pay for their defence. Pity they didn't think before drinking and driving.

Taking their cars won't help too much either, a fair proportion will just steal another one, and other drugs effectively produce the same dangerous outcomes but are not detected by normal breath testing.

Here's some advice for would-be DUIs: Don't try munching peppermints or any other masking substances, all you will do is increase your breath reading while signaling to the Officer that you are probably plssed. Holding your breath has much the same effect, as does blowing too hard so you can't win.

In tests I did a few months back for an Australian case, a popular throat lozenge used in Oz by heavy smokers to shift gunk in their throat effectively doubled the breath test result. I went from an 03 (150µg/L or youth limit) to an 061 (305µg/L), which in Oz would have seen me lose my licence.

However, increasing the penalties will certainly stop Joe or Josephine Average from taking that extra drink.

Cheers

That blimin' Josephine Average has a lot to answer for ;)

Me ole man did his fair share of DIC (never caught though) - who knows the term "Sunday school", so I am very careful about drinking and driving (I don't tend to drink at all!!).

812089 2009-09-21 06:44:00 I dont think you can compare NZ and Oz drink driving laws.
The Aus police have guns and attitude the public is just genuinely scared to drink drive over there.
I am pretty happy with the law as it is I can have a couple of cans and be well within the tolerance.
I dont drive drunk I stick to a 2 can rule if I do a 3rd can I dont drive home.
Its just too late to tighten up on it now will make criminals of little old ladies who have had a swig of cooking port lol.

812090 2009-09-21 07:16:00 A person noticed a couple of OZ cops without their guns recently.

I suppose they had not been drinking alcoholic beverages either as there is no evidence produced.
