812291 2009-09-21 09:31:00 Hi Foxy
Some great suggestions given so far. I have not seen the Kauri Museum at Matakana for many years but it was, and probably still is, well worth seeing.
The one north of Awanui sounds interesting and when we get up there again Mrs Misty and I must check out.

Saw the Hunterswasser toilets only two weeks ago and they are well worth the visit. There is a little 1/2 hour railway trip close by. We did not go on it because of time contraints but looked quite interesting. Apparently it is only at the weekends the engine is powered by steam (otherwise diesel).

In Paihia we went to Waitangi and while interesting, the guided tour was very disappointing. However when we went over to Russell on the 10 minute ferry (a must), we went a tour of the grounds of Pompallier House. Now that was truly amazing and very well worthwhile. On the day we went the Manager, Kate Martin, was the guide. She had everyone spell-bound with her knowledge and passion in telling and demonstrating about the old tannery and printing press. It was only $7-50 a person and very good value. She assured us that all her guides are as well trained (though that would be hard to believe !). Russell is a marvellous historic and quiet place to look around and enjoy for a few hours. Everyone seems so relaxed and friendly.

Foxy, you and your better half are welcome to stay overnight at our place. You can have a comfy queen size bed and your own bathroom. Just PM me.
Misty :)

PS - as Game Junkie says "great signature"

812295 2009-09-21 12:25:00 My home town is Whangarei/Kaikohe, and if you like beaches/bays there are plenty along the coast. From the Whangarei Heads (Paroa bay, and camping/cabin grounds), the Tutukaka Coast (Matapouri Bay, Sandy Bay, and the serene Nungruru Bay/River (has a sand spit, where I use to swim/kayak, with the bay on the other side; But now protected for it's marine environment, I think). Great Panoramic view just up the road.

You forgot the best one of the lot - Whale Bay. (www.tutukakacoastnz.com)
Just make sure you don't leave anything valuable in your car as it will most likely get broken in to :groan:
Might be better to park at Matapouri and walk from there.

812299 2009-09-21 22:27:00 Dammit... I wish I could remember the places I visited when I was up North. I took my family to a forest near Whangarei which was outstanding, with lush vegetation, great walking trails, and awesome kauris.

Perhaps contact DOC for good nature sites up there.

Was it the AH Reed Memorial Park? This has a treetops walkway which is really spectacular as it winds among the kauri trees.
