| 1105706 | 2010-06-01 10:32:00 | Thompson routers have a horrible interface, but they seem to work fairly well if you don't want to change any settings. The first wireless ones Telecom gave out were flaky as hell but the latest ones are fine. | Greven (91) | ||
| 1105707 | 2010-06-01 10:35:00 | Err you said limewire in post 5. Thats a P2P program Ah, correct Speedy - because the subject was brought up by Mr_O. Seems I won't need it even for downloading photographs. Still, you never know if a visitor will be keen. Nevertheless it certainly isn't foremost in my thoughts. In the end I am identifying if the change from D-Link to Thomson is worth adding another 12 months contract to the 12 month am signing already (ie total of 24 months locked in). Misty |

| 1105709 | 2010-06-01 10:57:00 | I've got a 585 too, and I can confirm it comes with 4 ethernet ports. The GUI isn't the greatest, but all the important options are there (firewalls, port forwarding, etc), but it uses 'friendly' names, eg port forwarding is called game and application sharing. You can select from quite a large amount of pre-configured options, or add your own. I can't compare the performance to any other modems though, having only used this model. It has some nice bonuses, like inbuilt support for a few DynDNS providers, and intrusion detection, as well as parental controls. The only advice I can give to owners is: DEFINE A PASSWORD! In its normal state, anyone, anywhere can connect to your IP, and see all your settings, modify them, etc. Not fun. Oh, and (to my knowledge) you can't change the port that the inbuilt web server operates on, so it's a little hard to set up a web server on your LAN without some fancy port-forwarding rules, even then, I'm afraid of mapping port 80, in case it diverts all traffic, locking me out of it. It has an SSH interface from memory too, with a custom CLI, not just busybox, making it easy to change settings without a GUI. Overall, it's not exactly pro gear, but it's quite good, even for semi-power users like me. It does get quite warm though. |

| 1105710 | 2010-06-01 19:48:00 | I don't know if it's worth adding another 12 months to your contract when you could just buy a new router from somewhere like Ascent or computerlounge for less | gary67 (56) | ||
| 1105711 | 2010-06-01 22:58:00 | Or a secondhand one off trademe. I got a d-link off trademe for $41 (you are getting a wireless router/modem for no money down) but you are tied for an additional 12 months. I guess if you -know- you will stick with them for 12months, then I guess you save... | utopian201 (6245) | ||

Yeah, I thought D-Link was bad before I saw the interface for the Thompson I don't know what they tried to do but if the design brief said "make it as un-intuitive as possible" then they succeeded really really well. Not to mention all the fun stuff is locked down by Telecom so you can't change it. If your D-Link is working and not overheating it should last quite a while and be fine. I really don't think you'll see much of an improvement in line speed with a new router, in fact it may even get worse, there's really no way of telling unless you test it out first. If not, then you end up in a 2 year contract for nothing. |

If I recall correctly, the Telecom modems are hardcoded to telecom, so you can't use them with any other ADSL provider. Nope, they can be used by any provider :) |
