1107226 2010-06-06 01:50:00 As you may remember about a week ago, I posted about my new new modem giving me grief, suddenly blocking off my access to the network every so often. As the problem has gotten worse, I'm returning the modem to PB tech at my next opportunity. (IE tuesday).
Before then, I'd like to know which modem I'm getting as a replacement. Which is where you guys come in.

If you guys can suggest a suitable modem router that is available from PB tech (or any other store on queen street) that is priced around $100 (up to an absolute maximum of $150-160...), that'd be awesome.
I'm going to be connecting my laptop wirelessly and my main pc via ethernet, so it only needs to have basic connectivity. If there's a usb or second ethernet port for my old pc, that'd be awesome too, but it's not absolutely necessary.

oh and as usual,
TL;DR - I need a new modem router for about $100, under a maximum of $150 to connect a laptop and a pc or two.

1107227 2010-06-06 04:23:00 I use an ASUS WL-600G. Never had any issues.
No idea what it cost me, I bought it trade.

1107228 2010-06-06 06:37:00 This (pbtech.co.nz), as recommended by Chilling Silence, one of the Mods here.

His word is good enough for me.

1107229 2010-06-06 09:56:00 I had one of these (www.dynalink.co.nz) works great and won PC World Router of the year a few years back. It lasted 4 or so years before it died of over heating. We now have a crappy DLINK one that is so bad it has to be reset every 10 hour or it over heats and doesn't work. icow (15313)
1107230 2010-06-06 11:03:00 Alright, nofam's suggestion seems to be a possible go.
I'll head down to PB tech after my first exam on tuesday, return the dud and if I don't have quite the money for that one, I'll look for the next thing down sort of thing.

It is getting rather irritating though, since I bought this latest one to replace an old vodafone one that kept losing connection on the ISP end.
Now it's at the other end of the router, but it's equally irritating - Connection times out and it takes a while for the error to actually come through, and generally requires a power-off.

1107231 2010-06-06 12:29:00 If all you need is basic connectivity, ring your ISP and tell them your old modem/router is crapping out. They may give a you a new one free of charge. Blam (54)
1107232 2010-06-06 12:50:00 Well my old modem was simply a 2 port wired one, with 1 ethernet 1 usb.
And they credited me $90 towards my internet bill, which is more than a new modem was worth anyway.

1107233 2010-06-07 02:46:00 Lynksys WRT 54GL will take any firmware I'm told. Roger Hunt (13648)

Yea, the WRT54G's are good but they are wireless routers only and need a seperate ADSL Modem.

For the average end user, this can be a bit of a hassle and an all in one is the easiest solution.

1107235 2010-06-07 04:48:00 All I want is something that can link my pc's and connect me to the internet as flawlessly as possible. Extra features like mac filtering are a bonus but not entirely necessary. As long as people can't access my connection, then I'm fine with that too.

I don't see what good a router would do me, since buying a cheapo modem and router would probably give me as many problems as i'm having at the moment, and I think I'd get better results with a decent priced modem/router combo.
