1107205 2010-06-06 01:03:00 When I insert a blank DVD-R into my DVD drive, it becomes a CD drive. Trying to access the disc from a DVD burning programme gives a "drive not available" error message.
However, if I put a DVD-R disc that has been recorded elsewhere into the drive, it remains a DVD and can be read with no difficulty.
I have checked that the driver is updated. Checking the hardware configuration shows no errors.
I'm stumped!

1107206 2010-06-06 01:08:00 What program are you using to burn to the burner?? And what version of windows are you using? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1107207 2010-06-06 01:12:00 Is this Windows 7 :p

Look here, advice from Speedy:

I just updated my motherboard and DVD-RW drive's firmware. Not sure if it has fixed it, because it can happen now and then, I seldom use optical discs these days.

For me, what I do know is that if there is no disc in the drive, you won't see it on the left side, just the right side. Until you put a disk in it. Not sure if this is the design of w7, some people say its not. Haven't found a fix for this yet.

Yes, it would think there is no disc in the drive when there is. Device Manager may not even think it is installed. I've not seen it happening, fingers crossed. But I can live with no DVD drive on the left side until the disc is in.

Exactly the Same -- BUT if you really want to show the drive there, right click a blank space in the List Anwhere the arrows are (www.imagef1.net.nz) and select " Show all folders" then it will show-- along with every the folder

Edited: There is no "Fix" for it, as its by design.

1107212 2010-06-06 02:07:00 Its probably some program you've installed thats "taken over". How many burning programs have you installed recently? And what are they? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1107213 2010-06-06 06:10:00 I am running XP. Thanks for the suggestion about other DVD burning programmes. I have just uninstalled Ashampoo DVD burner, and tried copying a video file with VLC media player, but got the same result. arbie1 (15810)
1107214 2010-06-06 09:53:00 ? You cant copy with VLC. Its plays dvds, it's not a copying program. Install this (support.microsoft.com) the version for SP2 or 3. WHAT exactly are you trying to burn? If its vob files, you need a dvd burning program, that can load / burn them Speedy Gonzales (78)
