813873 2009-09-25 23:08:00 Given the number of threads on this forum about Freeview, and DVD HDD recorders, I thought I would draw peep's attention to this review:

If you are thinking of getting either a Freeview box or a DVD HDD recorder, you may want to read the review and get both rolled into one. Sounds easy to set up too.

PS In case you are thinking this might be spam, let it be known that I don't work for Panasonic or Stuff or Noel Looming or Harvey Nomates or...

813874 2009-09-26 00:30:00 But at a price! How about getting a freeview box (~$100) with provision to plug in USB drive (~$100). Oh yes, two channels at once - well get 4 times the above and you could record 4 channels at once and buy a shelf unit with the ~$200 left over from your $1000. coldot (6847)
813875 2009-09-26 00:39:00 I am sure you are right.

And I am equally sure that there are some people who would prefer to pay a bit more for something simple to set up without all the macrame around the back that would result from your suggestion! Not to mention the extensive brain fade and domestic chaos that might result from trying to get the set up right. :)

813878 2009-09-27 07:41:00 I read the first post from john h and looked at the review. Now I am confused. I understand from previous threads that HD is mpeg4 and DVD is mpeg2 and that one can not record HD to DVD because of this difference of format but the review says you can record to HD and also DVD (BUT REDUCED CLARITY).
Can someone please unconfuse me.

813879 2009-09-27 08:29:00 There are two possible meanings for HD - one is HD as referring to High Definition TV - usually digital. Sometimes people have used HD as an abreviation for Hard Drive, instead of the more accurate HDD for Hard Disk Drive when they are talking of storage media.
For the storage problems - HD video or TV means big files, and a movie exceeds the capacity of a DVD. Along comes compression an - whoops - - - You can photograph a scene and get the equivalent of a HD view. You could photograph a newspaper picture of the same scene, but it would not be like an HD view. Both pictures could be saved in any format you chose, but at best only the first will remain HD. If you choose to save with maximum compression (to fit them both on a floppy disk with little spare space?) neither will be HD, both will be fuzzy low quality pictures. Movies have the same problem.

813880 2009-09-27 17:52:00 At this time you can't copy broadcast HD from a HDD recorder to a DVD. Copy protection cuts in and steps HD down to SD.

There is a new Blu-Ray HDD tuner/recorder which will allow you to record HD to Blu-Ray disk off the HDD but am not to sure on what you can do with regards to making extra copies. Mind you, at the price of Blu-Ray disks you wouldn't really want to.

Think I have all this right.
