814099 2009-10-04 05:23:00 Well, the law says cyclists need 1.5 metres of clearance. (Each Side presumably.) Cyclists (Assuming they are quite thick) each make a noonday shadow about 700 mm across the elbows, so x2 that's 1.4M. Add two lots of clearance at 1.5 M each side of each of two cyclists and we require 7.4 M of road width, or if they are old cyclists, about 24 ft 3 1/2". Roughly a two lane rural road. You should go home if faced with cyclists ahead. If there are cyclists behind you should quickly bury your car so the cyclist's steely gaze will not be offended by the sight of their mortal enemy.
If we have cyclists on the road it seems reasonable to assume they will be coming as often as they are going, and so to allow cyclists to ride in both directions, two abreast, uses 4 lanes. Obviously the cyclists are correct and all other vehicles, stock and pedestrians must be kept off the road at all times. Bus stops and parking soaces can become bike racks and petrol stations can become lycra dispensaries.
Furniture removals, and goods deliveries are going to be tediously slow in future, but at least the cyclists will be happy. New cycle roads will be built using pedal powered earthmovers, which should be refreshingly quiet. These new cycle roads will be urgently required as most current roads will have to become one-way due to the cycling width requirements. Current 4 lane roads will be the only cycle ways safe enough to allow for 2way cycle traffic. People at the end of current two way (car) streets will have to make special arrangements once their roads are either no-entry, or no-exit cycle streets. As a temporary cure for this, could cyclists be banned from such streets, and all become pedestrian precincts? People at North Cape may well benefit from the added exercise they will get walking to the shops in Kaitaia.

Right, are we agreed then? All motorways become cycleways, all other roads become walkways and we all freeze to death in the dark, Rodney Hyde is the obvious choice to be Minister of Motions.
It is expected that interest in the Martin Jet Pack will become intense as we head into Cycling Rules All Preccincts.

814101 2009-10-12 05:21:00 UPDATE: the three less seriously injured guys are now recovering well at home, still on the painkillers however. Their managers (wives) drove them all to the coffee shop yesterday to catch up with us after our Sunday ride.

Greg is now awake, has had the trach removed and is talking to his family, albeit briefly, as he is gets very tired very quickly and needs lots of sleep. He is being moved out of hospital later this week into a head injury rehabilitation centre.

So, some positive news to start the week!

Maybe some charges will be laid soon....

814103 2009-10-12 08:57:00 I suppose that is good news, but a pity it had to happen in the first place. R2x1 (4628)

814105 2009-10-15 22:42:00 Just heard that a victim of a hit and run on Peak Rd (near Helensville) on Wednesday, died in Auckland Hospital last night.

Dr Graham Robinson was 62 and was, by accounts, a gentle, friendly guy (he was cyclist known to members of our group, but not one of our group). He was out riding with a friend on a quiet country road, single file with plenty of room for the white ute to pass. The ute missed Graham's friend but took Graham out and did not stop. Graham was choppered to hospital with what we now know to be fatal injuries.

Just shocking! :annoyed: :dogeye:

And that is part of our planned route for this Sunday...

814106 2009-10-15 22:49:00 Doctor dies after hit-and-run
New 10:32AM Friday Oct 16, 2009

A 62-year-old North Shore doctor has died from head injuries after he was knocked off his bicycle in a hit-and-run northwest of Auckland on Wednesday.

Ian Graham Robinson, from Mairangi Bay, was riding with a friend, a fellow doctor, near Helensville, northwest of Auckland, when hit by a white Toyota utility.
Dr Robinson never regained consciousness after the incident on Peak Rd and died in hospital last night.

The driver did not stop and police have appealed for information.

Dr Robinson and his friend were riding about 25 metres apart on a straight stretch of road, police said.

Sergeant Mike Colson said the friend saw the impact but the only description he could provide of the vehicle was that it was a white or cream 1980s style Toyota utility vehicle with a rear deck with a fibreglass hard cover.

It appeared to be old and discoloured.

Mr Colson said the friend gave immediate first aid and went in the ambulance with Dr Robinson to hospital.

Mr Colson said the immediate treatment Dr Robinson got from his friend gave him the best chance he could have of surviving his injuries.

Mr Colson said the witness would be interviewed again to see if he could provide a more detailed description of the Toyota.

"All we have is that it is a white 1980s, 1990s early style Toyota ute. He saw Toyota on it so it is definitely a Toyota," said Mr Colson.

It was too soon to say what charges could be laid although it was being treated as a hit and run causing death.
