813256 2009-09-27 00:21:00 Deterence doesn't work very well then does it, if it did States with the death penalty would have no murders, when in fact often the lowest murder rates are in countries with relatively low penalties.I suggest you do some more comprehensive research then - particularly regarding places such as the UAE, Singapore etc. I also wasn't just talking about murders, I was talking about offending in general (although it happens that the particular case at hand here is a manslaughter / murder case).

Your comment also neglects the gun culture and lax restrictions on guns that flourish in the USA...

But that needs a modicum of common sense.

Too true Cic its a bit like me looking at porn I know I shouldn't but its not going to stop me.

813258 2009-09-27 00:42:00 That will be a lot of life sentences you're handing out there. Be interesting to see you people front up in a real Court and say the crap you say on here to the parties involved. There are no winners in these types of offences, the labels you give people like scum etc perhaps help you forget you're dealing with real people here. Very few people set out to kill people deliberately on the road, unfortunately they don't always comprehend the stupidity of their actions until after the fact. An example being the students in the Wairarapa racing last week, you'd throw them in jail but if you were their parents I bet you'd have a different attitude.

If what I said is crap then you have a pretty sad veiw of things.
In fact I cant be bothered writing anymore.

Funny how anyone who doesn't agree with you is a bleedin heart git or politically correct. You can't argue your case so I guess that is you have to resort to that. Personally I'd like to have a safe country for my kids to live in, the policies you promote rather than making the country safer make it more dangerous. "Sensible Sentencing" is contributing to more severe crime as people have nothing to lose and no attempt is made to address the issues that cause crime in the first place.

I think you got it wrong buddy, I think their point was that people had everything to lose.

Well I'd have thought the majority on here would fully support the freedom to own firearms . Personally I can see merits for both side of that argument, it comes down to freedom to do what you want versus preventing nutters getting hold of firearms . Usually I'd back freedom but then I'd have to buy a gun to protect myself and I don't particularly want one .

However, Canada has more guns per person than USA I believe but not the same murder rate, so gun culture is a red herring .

This isn't a murder case, it is a driving offence, apparently with drugs as a exacerbating factor . No one set out to kill anyone, albeit their stupidity meant that was the result .

If you're going to be locked away for life anyway, what do you have to lose?

People with that mentality are damaged goods, No treatment on any level will get through to them.

Well, Nothing apart from a bullet, so the next best course of action is to lock them away from future victims. If they have nothing left to lose then that's fine, They can do think about that in their cell.
