However, neither would an awful lot of offenders who would be prevented from committing their crime in the first place if they thought there was a reasonable chance of being on the wrong end of a harsh penalty if / when they are caught. Sentences are not just about the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, they're also there to deter others from offending. If they appear too soft, potential criminals are far more likely to offend and risk the consequences. There's nothing wrong with compassion, but we shouldn't let it compromise our justice system. Deterence doesn't work very well then does it, if it did States with the death penalty would have no murders, when in fact often the lowest murder rates are in countries with relatively low penalties. |

Some people have a predilection for crime so usa is going to have a higher crime rate than say Iceland So Canada and the USA should have pretty much the same murder rate under your theory? The trouble is there is research on Criminal Justice and many of your pet theories don't hold up to scrutiny. |

You said you were a prosecutor . Are there different sort of prosecutors that don't work for the crown? Where you a freelance prosecutor for a higher authority than the crown like a maoris marai justice system . |

So, there should be no deterrence for murder? after all according to you it doesn't work. |
