1107341 2010-06-06 11:05:00 yeh gud guess i am indeed a uni student so desktops aren't realy an option.

I don't need games to play on max fps just laptops with decent graphics cards (HD5650 etc). I'm not that into gaming but would just like a laptop that can do a bit of gaming (modern warfare 2, etc) if I want to.

Any ideas? (would Acer AS5740G-434G64Mn be a good choice?)

Sure it is, take your PC to uni, pick up a keyb and mouse at a chain store cheaply and get a monitor couried to you or at one of the great stores in NZ - Ascent or Computer Lounge, Playtech, free postal even maybe or the whole set

For uni it's kinda split for me. Laptops are nice but when I was at uni I didn't move it, it was just on my desk. Not sure now but laptop users at lectures were not cool and you could get the odd paper ball thrown at you :p

Gone are the days when entry lappies were $1,600.
Definitely if you wanna move flats, go back home for the holidays, lappies do make sense. These days they are less the need of upgrades vs the past. Briefcase or two and a lappie.

Yeah they are a lot cheaper on a student income exp when you wanna upgrade. In my days 256MB was the max, well before that it was just 96MB or so .. I bought all my 3 lappies used. These days it might easier when HD are in GBs and RAM to the 4GBs...

1107342 2010-06-06 11:12:00 I just bought a gateway NV59 pc, it runs l4d2 pretty well. Not stellar like my desktop, but it does ok.
I bought it from Noel Leeming, although it seems to be delisted from their site.
The full specs on it are
Intel DC i5 430m @ 2.26 (i believe)
ATI 5470 512mb DDR3 dedicated
2gb DDR3 ram - a bit low, but bugger it, I can add an extra stick later on.
15" WLED hd display 1366-8x768 res (a beautiful display... albeit a little low on res, but whatcha gonna do)

When I bought it, I got them to give me a bag and norton IS 2010 aswell, coming to a total of exactly $1400.

You could also try this acer www.noelleeming.co.nz

Not sure how different the graphics cards are in terms of performance, but it seems that and a smaller harddrive is all that separates them. (edit - from the previously suggested acer, i mean)

1107343 2010-06-06 20:56:00 The 9400M on the Macbook I've got means I can do some relatively decent gaming such as WC3, COD4, all max settings and it's happy.
The newer models have an nVidia 320M I believe too, although they're slightly more expensive, mine with a 9400M set me back just under $1500.
Battery lasts over 5 hours while gaming with WiFi too!!

1107344 2010-06-07 00:31:00 Asus is considered to sell laptops that are pretty stellar for gaming, although their website is impossible to use. Fifthdawn (9467)
