| 1107501 | 2010-06-06 22:00:00 | I have a friend who happened to get his laptop fixed. I had a look at the diff prices of Window versions - OEM, and retail. Do you have to buy any hardware to access the OEM version? If not, who in the right mind would buy the retail version? Before, he lost his Windows recovery CD and Windows restore didn't work but someone managed to fixed it for him - maybe manually. |

However, the OEM version is not transferable between computers, whereas the retail and upgrade versions are (as long as they're only used on one computer at a time). | pcuser42 (130) | ||

Instead of price goughing consumers - mostly non IT people who go to the toaster shops and pay $300-400 for Windows. You could just price the retail or OEM the same and make it one version, the same if you bought it yourself or with a computer. Would people get a diff OEM version for each system upgrade - yeah right. For those who upgrade freq enough, it could be beneficial to get the retail version instead. Cheers Trev, he fixed it but he is in Singapore, the laptop is XP era so it might not work too well, he's looking at a new laptop too. |

"Technically thats not correct" if you look at the packaging that OEM comes with it clearly states only on a fully assembled PC. Read the top lines (www.imagef1.net.nz) - if it doesn't come in the white sleeve, thats pictured, then the shop has removed it. But the license is still inside. BUT MS dont really seem to care Interesting read on OEM Licensing (www.zdnet.com). |

| 1107508 | 2010-06-06 23:11:00 | I used OEM Win 7 on this machine when I built it then do my own images It's not that difficult, I built one for a friend to on the same lines and made an image which I gave them a copy of and kept a copy encase they loose theirs | gary67 (56) | ||
| 1107509 | 2010-06-06 23:14:00 | If someone buys a PC from a real computer place, not the toaster shops, then they should be given the DVD as well. Anyone who purchases PC's from me gets the mother board box with all the CD's / DVD's and any other software they have purchased. (if they lose it or misplace it thats their problem) As we all know the toaster shops, (name Brand PC's) usually come with a recovery partition, not the DVD, which if the HDD fails is useless. They used to supply the CD's, but as per normal, cost savings -- now they dont. As for recovery disc'c, windows now has the option to make a recovery backup. The problem is the average mum and dad user has no idea of most of these features and by the time they need it, its to late. Bit like making backups --- There are countless numbers of people that dont back up important items, and its not till they almost, or do lose something then its the IT persons fault for not being able to recover them. |
