1107331 2010-06-06 09:23:00 lately I've been doing some research on the best gaming laptop around the price range of $1500 NZD. I've seen some quite decent laptop specs on a few acer laptops but I have heard the brand is not very reliable? (I know toshiba and asus seem to be the most reliable, but also their price is the most expensive... don't think any gaming laptops even come close to $1500)

Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

1107332 2010-06-06 09:53:00 laptop and gaming are two words that don't go together. For gaming you really need a desktop as laptops are not upgradeable. If you want to play FPS on max settings then you need the best graphics card you afford and you can't fit it into a laptop. A $1500 laptop isn't going to cut the mustard even a $3000 one would struggle to keep up with an average gaming desktop gary67 (56)

I wouldn't say "not upgradeable": difficult (beyond RAM and maybe the HDD), sure, but not impossible. ;)

1107334 2010-06-06 10:06:00 I would put in a curler, sure you can play games on it but it won't be as great as a PC but you can still can at lesser graphics setting ..... Not sure about $1500 but then again I don't keep up to date with things ...

Sure if you are a student or flatting a laptop can be great and play the odd game..

How serious are you thinking? Gaming isn't something laptops do well unless you spend silly money. But have a look at the HP's DV9's on trademe, they go pretty good and you can pick one up for under a grand if your lucky

1107337 2010-06-06 10:32:00 yeh gud guess i am indeed a uni student so desktops aren't realy an option.

I don't need games to play on max fps just laptops with decent graphics cards (HD5650 etc). I'm not that into gaming but would just like a laptop that can do a bit of gaming (modern warfare 2, etc) if I want to.

Any ideas? (would Acer AS5740G-434G64Mn be a good choice?)

1107339 2010-06-06 11:00:00 Here's a thread on that exact model
pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

Looks good, and would be goot for occasional gaming I suppose.

One setup I've recommended to some uni students is a cheap netbook($400-$500), and then a seperate desktop for about $1000 or so.

That way you've got portability and long battery life when you're on the road, but power and a big screen when you get back home...
