814019 2009-09-26 06:46:00 I wasn't involved in the cycle crash on the waterfront this morning (www.nzherald.co.nz)

But a number of friends were - they were from our group.

One is still in critical care and the other three will be in hospital for at least tonight, possibly longer.

Four guys in a group of six or so, travelling single file at under 30km/h taken out by a silly girl who rolled through a stop sign (on her way to an exam by all accounts). All the cyclists were wearing hi-vis vests.

Aside from the physical injuries, others in the group were traumatised to see friends splattered over the road and the bikes the injured guys were riding were completely munted. About $40,000 dollars worth of replacement bikes will be required.

All because someone didn't stop at a stop sign for a few seconds! :(

It did occur to me when I first read the article earlier today that it may have been your lot.

So sorry to hear that Joh - let's hope everyone makes a full recovery. Had a few 'offs' when I used to ride my motorcycle that were caused by car drivers doing U-turns and running Stop signs etc

Got caught by 1 car doing a u turn after being stopped at the side of the road but I've never trusted anything to stop at stop signs.

814027 2009-09-26 18:57:00 Yeah I was real sorry to hear it.

But I wonder how so many were hit when they were riding in single file.

814028 2009-09-26 20:03:00 But I wonder how so many were hit when they were riding in single file. This is from the Herald this morning:

They said the car appeared to slow down briefly before speeding towards the cyclists.

"She accelerated into the middle of the group, just cleaned the guys up,"

Hopefully your friend in critical care does OK. Head injuries are awful. At least his helmet would have given him some protection.
