812876 2009-09-22 23:10:00 Looks like the wife and I will have a golden opportunity to visit Upsidedown Land after the first of the year for two weeks or more .

Is the weather better in January or February?

I will want to try fishing there and need to know the cost of a US Citizen's license to fish there legally . I hear your jails are harsh .

Maybe I can duct tape multiple packages of Cherry Kool-Aid to my body under my clothes and get them through customs . Eh?

Get Ye readyith for an Yankee Invasion Team of two . :clap

812878 2009-09-22 23:25:00 NZ Trout Fishing Licences. There are 2 Trout Fishing Licences for NZ. 1 that covers 99% of NZ and one for the Taupo region. Also it would pay you to read up about Didymo or commonly called rock snot which is an invasive slim that covers the rocks and bottoms of rivers killing of the food supply of trout. It is only found so far in rivers in the lower half of the South Island and can be spread through fishing gear, waders, boats etc.

Will we see penguins on the streets of ChCh at that time of the year?

812881 2009-09-22 23:28:00 If you're fishing at sea, my understanding is that tourists don't require a special license - like everyone, they need to comply with minimum size limits and daily catch restrictions. See: www.fish.govt.nz

If you're fishing for trout, then you will need a license. These vary in cost depending on where you are fishing, and how long you want a license for. If you go with a charter company or a local guide, they'll usually sort it all out for you.

Whatever you do, make sure you fill out your arrival card properly and be honest when MAF officials ask you if you are carrying any food, plant or animal material. Generally if you're honest and tell them what you have, you won't have any hassles. If you lie and get caught, there are fines involved (and you could end up in jail if it's serious enough).

812882 2009-09-22 23:33:00 Beginning to mid January can be unstable weather, every xmas we seem to see people on tv striking down tents at campgrounds because a weather bomb has hit. Best weather mid jan to end of feb begining of march it start cooling off a bit.
Best place for Mr trout imo Motueka river.
But then I am biased I was born there although we used different fishing methods like .303 (Ministry of Works spinner) and jelly spelt with a g and cement thrown in the river and nets and electrical using big hobart welder/generator and snorkeling with speargun.

812883 2009-09-22 23:39:00 I haven't knowingly lied to any customs officials - well, not since I brought some Chinese art from Hong Kong through Hawaii.

I didn't even lie then as the agent looked at what I bought- felt sorry for me - and pushed me through the gate. He missed the pictures UNDER the cheap velvet pictures of the junks and the Hong Kong skyline in the frames.

Is Kool-Aid contraband?

812884 2009-09-22 23:51:00 Sea water fishing is free but trout and salmon licences cost a fair bit.
The fish aren't native to here I think they are from the us west coast and need restocking in some rivers hence the price.
Dont need cool aid drink L&P when you are here.
