1108708 2010-06-10 05:30:00 Hi,
Unfortunately I have an old desktop computer with only a 800mhz CPU and only 256mg of Ram. I am running Windows XP at the moment but it is rather slow. So I need a free and fast operating system that I can install on the desktop computer because I have a rather empty wallet. If anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful

Thanks

What are you looking to use the PC for? Linux is the obvious choice, as nedkelly says, but there may be a particular distro that's suited to your needs, as you'll want to run as light an OS as possible with those specs.

1108711 2010-06-10 05:45:00 Yes Puppy Linux is rather good. Any other suggestions? quark (15122)
1108712 2010-06-10 05:47:00 The pc has all my music on it and i connect it to the net via a ethernet cable through my laptop which is using wireless. So the operating system will need to be able to stream music over a ethernet cable to my laptop. The laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate. And thats all it will need to be able to do apart from casual browsing off the internet.

Thanks

1108713 2010-06-10 05:48:00 i've run xp on smaller specs than that. it went ok goodiesguy (15316)
1108714 2010-06-10 05:50:00 Yeah it runs ok. But I need something a bit faster. And it only needs to stream a bit of music and browse the net.
Thanks

1108715 2010-06-10 06:02:00 RAM is limiting, I have a 600Mhz 320MB on Win2000. For those who wanna use the computer with some MS familiarity.

I find RAM is a biggie when a webpage could eat up 32MB RAM.

1108716 2010-06-10 06:07:00 Thats very true. Thats why I need a real fast operating system quark (15122)
1108717 2010-06-10 06:14:00 A fast OS won't give you any more ram... although for basic web browing and streaming, 256MB is plenty.

Some kind of small Linux distro will fit what you're after perfectly.
