815170 2009-09-29 08:02:00 I'm looking to buy a dvd recorder and want to know what features I should be looking for. I don't have a hd tv I still have an old school crt (yes really!!)
What dvd models should I avoid.
Also can I watch another channel when I'm recording?

815171 2009-09-29 08:17:00 Avoid any that don't have a DVB-T Freeview tuner. However, do you really need removable media? Most people don't and would be better to get a PVR, such as a Tivo or MagicTV (both coming out later this year). maccrazy (6741)
815172 2009-09-30 05:01:00 I take it a DVB-T freeview turner is not the same as a digital turner, excuse my ignorance. I want a dvd hard drive recorder basically to record programmes off tv so tivo is probably more than I need, I think don't know heaps about it. dazhan (15278)

You are not alone.

815174 2009-09-30 08:48:00 Yes, DVB-T is digital. It is the name of the standard used for digital terrestrial in New Zealand, DVB-S is used for digital satellite, ATSC in the US etc.

Buying a PVR such as a Tivo or MagicTV will cost a lot less than a DVD recorder with a digital tuner, which looking at the Noel Leeming website seems to be around $1200. I've also heard that the EPG only goes a few hours forward with the Panasonic 250GB HD DVD Recorder instead of the full week ahead because it doesn't support MHEG-5 which is used to transmit the EPG. Perhaps someone can confirm this? It would mean you would have to set manual timers like on a VCR instead of just selecting the show you want to record in the EPG and clicking record.

Hope that helps. :)

815175 2009-09-30 08:49:00 DVB stands for Digital Video Broadcasting with the T on the end it stands for Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial and DVB-S stands for Digital Video Broadcasting Satellite. Any DVD hard drive recorder will do. I have a Sony HX950 which is 18 months old and has been superseded. Sony is a pretty good make. Depending on how you have it hooked up you can watch another channel while recording.

815176 2009-09-30 19:04:00 Any DVD hard drive recorder will doIf you want to record Freeview it will need a digital tuner (most are analogue) unless you want to rig it up with set top boxes etc which is unnecessarily complicated. maccrazy (6741)
815177 2009-09-30 19:57:00 I think the only Freeview DVD Hard Drive recorder around at the moment is this one.
