| 1108350 | 2010-06-12 02:56:00 | ATi have always been playing catch up, shader model 3, multi-gpu, driver updates and stability....I have no problem favouring nV over ATi.... I have to disagree here, the last 2 generations ATI has not been playing second fiddle to nvidia because they can't "catch up", they have been smart and even publicly stated that their top GPU would be targeted at mainstream markets, they did this for the 4870 (and released the 4870X2 for high end) and also for the 5870 (with the 5970 being the "X2" version). And this time round that strategy paid off big time, because they didn't focus on a balls out performance card thay were able to release the 5870 6 months ahead of nvidia without any production troubles, and a respectable power envelope. As for drivers, while nvidia has had some nice innovations (downloadable game profiles) ATI has been releasing 12 driver updates a year since 2002 when "Catalyst" was launched, I have not had serious driver issues with ATI for the last 6-7 years! |

You disagree, yet contradict yourself, I'm talking last 7 yrs, you are talking about the last 18months! I didnt say the 4xxx was junk, but it still required polish in the form of the 5xxx series...As for ATi driver...LOL, the last 2 yrs have been good, before that they rotated games for testing....do you do any research or just waffle from some user experience?....the game rotation testing was the cause for 1 update braking the improvements from the last...too many updates, users got lost....Linux support was crap!... ATi current strategy is fine, build a low heat, power gpu and just multiply it..., but that is not building the strongest, fastest gpu is it! |

ATi current strategy is fine, build a low heat, power gpu and just multiply it..., but that is not building the strongest, fastest gpu is it! Stop talking out of your arse. ATI is way better than Nvidia the last 6 or so years. The 4xxx series pretty much dominated the mid-high end market, while being tons cheaper than nvidias counterparts. The HD 4890 for example, the same price as a GTX 260 and beat the ****ing **** out of it. HD 4870 on par with the GTX 275 and over $100NZD cheaper. HD 4870x2, beats the GTX 285 around same price. ATI strategy? LOL what about Nvidia rebranding and renaming - They have done this twice recently already. Nvidiots - "Hey since the 8800gt is like the fastest card atm and ATI can't compete lets just rename it to the 9800gt but on a smaller die hehehehe". ATI invested in 55nm, GDDR5 since the release of the 4xxx series. Nvidia stuck to GDDR3, but still had a large bus size, unfortunately this costs ****ing heaps to produce and hardly any game benefits from this over GDDR clock. WHO THE **** CARES IF THEYRE NOT BUILDING THE STRONGEST CARD. Its target is mainstream, regular, gamer, corporates, consumers not some resource-intensive business, high tech, state of the art, super computer. ATI has stuck by to what consumers want and that is a high performance yet low cost card. The lower power requirement and the lower output udp the better, so you don't have to spend loads on a new psu, and cooling. In todays market, ATI is in the lead by far. They still have the fastest GPU 5970, which is the same price as the GTX 480. At when Nvidia responds with the GTX 480 x2 version, ATI will be ready to release their 6xxx cards |
