| 815318 | 2009-10-01 04:25:00 | Sorry Twelvevolts, but here is yet another one!!!! . nzcity . co . nz/news/article . aspx?id=105645&fm=psp,nwl" target="_blank">home . nzcity . co . nz Ken :waughh::waughh::mad::mad: It's uncanny how they always know there is no remorse when they usually refuse to meet with them . Ten years ago this sentence would have gone without comment, but now we have Sensible Sentencing we have every family coming out and saying the sentence was light (which they may well be) . However restorative Justice is more likely to help the victim than the current system but Sensible Sentencing seems to mean the only option for every offence is sending people to jail for long periods . Garth McMinto doesn't get it but filling people with hate towards offenders is not actually better for the victims . The number one question victims usually have is Why Me? Facing up to the offender usually helps with answering that question even if the offender is a whack job, at least the victim gets to see that for themselves and it appears to help . They also get a better gauge of whether or not the offender really is remorseful . However, whilst we're on this tough sentencing crusade, many victims will not get the chance as they end up believing the sentence imposed is an important part of their recovery, which makes you dependent on the Judge, the law or someone else but not yourself . Not to knock counselling which will help some victims, but good counselling would empower the victim not disempower them like the SST does . I have seen victims say in the media that they weren't going to make their life dependent on what the offender did or didn't do . These people seem to recover faster . |

| 815320 | 2009-10-01 05:57:00 | Funny in USA you dont hear the victims of murder try and stop the murderer getting his ass fried in an electric chair or what ever they use. Exact opposite they rage when ever there is a stay of execution. |

| 815322 | 2009-10-01 23:17:00 | Funny in USA you dont hear the victims of murder try and stop the murderer getting his ass fried in an electric chair or what ever they use . Exact opposite they rage when ever there is a stay of execution . That's completely wrong - you do hear that all the time . That's one of the reasons they execute so few people, the other one is they are so poor at identifying the right offender they have to spend fifteen years allowing appeals . The movement against the death penalty is building in the US, not receding . The Innocence Project may have something to do with that, unfortunately DNA evidence is showing they get the wrong person far too often . Apparently your political brethren don't like hearing this, as it isn't good for capital punishment when you execute an innocent guy so they try and stop people getting DNA testing so they can't prove their innocence . No doubt they call that Sensible Sentencing as well, but for the rest of us one strong reasons against the death penalty is that innocent people can die when you have it . Either way, American victimitis is hardly a model we'd want here . Next thing you know, you'd be getting sued for hurting peoples feelings or some other such nonsense (I know SST types are sensitive to being challenged) . As I said earlier, vicitims recover better when they let go not when they get embroiled in the details of the offenders life . There is also a media bias in this country, every time anything happens they interview Garth McMinto and the Police Union boss . Hardly like to get a balanced view from either of those two people but the media are lazy and don't bother to challenge either of them most of the time . |
