815150 2009-09-30 20:09:00 The techs were told in advance what the job was when the job was booked (file recovery, computer not starting up - beeps). It was mentioned during the episode. So there is no excuse not to bring data recovery software / sets of RAM. Those are all fair enough comments - if someone called me with those problems, theres no way I would try a data recovery on site, and would have mentioned this before hand, and explained why.
The second tech actually had the right idea, slave the drive to another PC - they said GOW recovered 600 odd out of the 918 lost - done correctly as the second tech wanted, you should recover most if not all, or at least show which ones are gone for good, and this can take several hours with the correct recovery software.

You NEVER install software on a PC that's had data lost, it runs the risk of overwriting the very data you are trying to recover.

That's why I have portable data recovery software on my flash drive ready to go. Then again, I'd turn off the PC ASAP as well.

815152 2009-09-30 20:19:00 I have portable software as well, but never use it.

Did a test a while back - deleted 3oo files, ran the portable software the following day to simulate a average user actions (normally), recovered about 2/3rd's, ran get data Back with drive as a slave, took 4 1/2 hours to scan the drive and got the lot.

815158 2009-09-30 22:58:00 I used Easeus data recovery wizard a few mths ago. Did a good job, on a memory card. Managed to recover all of the files off a memory card, even tho windows couldnt see the card at all. Speedy Gonzales (78)
