| 815078 | 2009-10-01 07:28:00 | A review, earlier than I thought: First problem is it turns on Automatic Updates without telling you, which means that it does a scan of the system and then tries to download Internet Explorer 8 a P.O.S. which I don't want because I have a Pentium 3 running on a very modest laptop, which goes fine as long as it is not bogged down by bloated software. It took me a while to realize it was indeed M.S.S.E. which had already slowed my computer down on first boot of the day, I only use it once a week for a particular job I do each Friday. Here we are, hours later, after going for a meal and leaving it to download something it apparently needs. The program is still useless in that nothing will work until the download is complete which is pathetic really, not even a heuristic scan available in the interim. 50 megabytes downloaded and it looks like only two thirds done, no warning from MS that this is a download of virus definitions, presumably, which should not be undertaken on dial up unless one can afford to be effectively incommunicado for at least 3 hours and counting. This is B.S. I am already tempted to abort and call the whole thing off, but will continue and maybe finish the download on broadband where I am going to work tomorrow, but not sure they will appreciate such a huge use of their monthly allotment, this is typical of MS, not even the common courtesy of the most basic information as in how big the prospective download might be. I feel really annoyed about this. Decided to abort, not suitable for dial-up users anyway. |

| 815082 | 2009-10-01 10:34:00 | I never, never, never have it on "Automatic Updates", around the second Tuesday of each month I switch to "Notify me but don't automatically etc...." then after the month's updates are done I switch back to "Turn off automatic updates" but after the stuttering at switch on today I had a look and found that it was set to "Automatic updates", I installed M.S.S.E. yesterday and uninstalled it today, after updating to version 1 and downloading virus definitions for about 3 hours and only getting about 2/3's of the way through the download. | zqwerty (97) | ||

And the new virus definitions on a slowish broadband only took me about 4-5 min. It would be nice to be able to see the download size though. |

I can also confirm that - Just done two workshop PC's at the same time as a test , didn't turn on Auto updates afterwards, and took 4-5 minutes, thats also running windows updates on another new PC at the same time. | wainuitech (129) | ||
