| 1108965 | 2010-06-11 05:13:00 | You said: "What I do is split my PC HD into 2 pieces, system and data files." How do you do that? |

| 1108967 | 2010-06-11 05:38:00 | Ok thanks for that. To get this clear in my head, once I partition my current harddrive, I will then have two C & D. So I backup data files to D drive? So that means my wondows files and program files are still in C drive, and if something happens to the C drive I can lose all my windows files and programs? If that happens I will need to reload windows and all the programs fresh? Ultimately I would like to think that my windows & program files are kept somewhere safe so I can activate them should I need to restore my computer to its original settings. How do I do that? |

| 1108971 | 2010-06-11 08:11:00 | Ok thanks for that . To get this clear in my head, once I partition my current harddrive, I will then have two C & D . So I backup data files to D drive? So that means my wondows files and program files are still in C drive, and if something happens to the C drive I can lose all my windows files and programs? If that happens I will need to reload windows and all the programs fresh? Ultimately I would like to think that my windows & program files are kept somewhere safe so I can activate them should I need to restore my computer to its original settings . How do I do that? If you have 1 HD you can have C: and D: If you have 2 HD you could have C: D: E: F: Or you could split the 1st HD and not the 2nd HD and get C: D: E: So I backup data files to D drive? Yes, if you want . But . . if the 1st HD breaks down you lose both C: and D: cos they are the same physical H D . So that means my wondows files and program files are still in C drive, and if something happens to the C drive I can lose all my windows files and programs? Yes . Ultimately I would like to think that my windows & program files are kept somewhere safe so I can activate them should I need to restore my computer to its original settings . How do I do that? I have 2 physical HDs in my computer case . I have my personal files on my 2nd H D . Because I have split my 1st HD into 2 pieces, I copy my personal files to the D: I also copy a image file (after using a software) of my C: and store that in my 2nd HD as well as the D: I also have a external HD where I have another copy :D I backup every night before I go to bed . |

The free software is a bit harder to use than paid for software. The cheapest way might be to save your files and just get Windows Setup to split it for you - you can specify how big the size is. Ie, if you have a 500GB, you can choose the Windows drive to be 250GB or 20GB etc etc... If you wanna make the image, like a recovery CD, Windows XP does not provide a free software, Windows 7 does. So ... you may need to get a paid for software ora free software that might be harder to use. |
