1108872 2010-06-11 08:25:00 Firewall off for a few days isn't going to hurt unless you going places that are dodgy. My firewall never on :)

Have you tried to disable norton internet security or not? Wasn't sure by your post. I have seen firewalls do weird things and Nortons do even weirder

For all connections to be lost it should be the router but after so many it must be something else.

Next time it happens try un plugging all network cables at the PC end and see if the wireless works. If it comes back up you know it's a wired/hardware problem.

1108873 2010-06-11 08:28:00 Ok I'll disable it on my lappy for a bit. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1108874 2010-06-11 08:33:00 Any of the freq could overlap with other users - like your good old neighbours.

1, 6 and 11 does not overlap.

If you wanted to create a ESSID yo use the overlapping ones like commercial wifi providers (like Telecom); they overlap them by about 10-20% so you you are using it in your car and you travel around you seamlessly connect to diff Access Point with the same SSID.

PS: I was getting disconnections like 5x a day, now I get no disconnections ever since implemented.

1108875 2010-06-11 09:32:00 Aside from my sister's partner's router upstairs, there's no Wifi around me. At least, nothing that I have ever picked up with my laptop.
It's going ok at the moment anyway. And I've fortunately found a way to enter my ISP details into the router myself. Which is cool, saves me about 5-10 minutes waiting for the router to reset itself up.

1108876 2010-06-11 22:04:00 I didn't have wifi around me either .. you could be anything, neighbours using non broadcasting SSIDs, could be your microwave, your cordless phone etc. Nomad (952)
1108877 2010-06-12 04:36:00 Alright so even with my laptop turned off and no active wireless, I still lost my wired connection. Bummer.
I guess for now I'll just have to deal with it until I get irate enough to plow through every scenario I can think of. But at the moment I'm sick and tired of it and can't be bothered.

1108878 2010-06-12 05:01:00 I can't see how this is a wireless issue if you lost wired connection. Try replacing the network cable. You have mentioned a cross over cable at some point, this shouldn't be used from PC to router. berryb (99)
1108879 2010-06-12 05:42:00 these days it does not matter, they are smart enof to register. you can mix up cross over to straight cables all you like. 568A vs 568B.

on a academic note, assuming the adsl router can be defined as a modem. both a modem and a pc is defined as a "end point" therefore between 2 "similar" devices you need a crossover. :D

i doubt it is the network cable.
got one spare lying around. and hey why is the wireless quitting - that does not need a cable.

me thinks it is the adsl router modem unit.
got a spare one or can you borrow one

1108880 2010-06-12 05:50:00 This is my 3rd router/modem combo. First was vodafone's 1 port, second was an SMC barricade, now I'm onto a Belkin 4 port.
And all my connections drop simultaneously, wireless or not. I'm usign two desktops via wired and a laptop via wireless.

I did get a dropout across the network when trying to cross my xbox with my laptop while using the internet via the wifi. That's all that was.

1108881 2010-06-12 07:08:00 Cant be bothered looking back -- Lazy eh!

Does the PC's or laptop reconnect right away if you reboot the affending PC / Laptop (& not rebooting the router)
