1108318 2010-06-09 06:50:00 Hey guys, just wondering which of these graphics cards will be better under gaming conditions?

The 1792MB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260 ($415.11)
or the ATI Radeon HD5770 1GB ($289.00)

Thanks in advance,
VendettaSteel

The GTX 260 is the slightly faster card overall but doesn't have DX11 of course (like that matters atm), but is a VERY poor buy at $415

I would buy a ATI5850 around the $450-$500 mark that blows both those cards out of the water, and if you want cheap that 5770 is ok at that price.

1108319 2010-06-09 07:10:00 Seconded.
My card is an XFX 5770, brilliant for my purposes. Handles bioshock 2 and left for dead 2 in 1080p with max/near max setts.
If you get the 260 you mightaswell get a 5850 instead.
And directx 11 will be very useful when developers start taking advantage of it.

1108320 2010-06-09 22:44:00 There are many issues to consider here. At the moment ATI Radeon cards are clearly superior to the current nVidia products based on many reviews though I have an early model GTX260(there are early and late versions which are different) and am quite happy with it for the games I currently play on the monitor(1080p) that I use. Big flatscreen monitors with high resolution need better video cards. On the other hand I myself have recently looked at upgrading my CPU but have run into a harsh reality that the game I play, Dragon Age: Origins, which is a recent game, is in fact a DirectX 9 game and won't really benefit from more grunt. The bottom line is only buy what you need and know where your system bottleneck is.

P.S. Also, remember that powerful new video cards often require you to upgrade your power supply as well.

Ah but there's 6 months difference in their release dates. When the next top Nvidia is released it will win. 6 months later the top ATI comes out and wins. And so on.
Occasionally there isn't much of an improvement (whichever) but usually there is.

You buy the one you can:
A)Afford
B)Prefer
C)Suits your gaming needs (or desires, my needs don't come in to it when I can afford it)

1108323 2010-06-10 01:36:00 They are very similar cards in performance terms, but the 5770 is a newer card with more features (dx11, bit streaming). I think the 5770 is also slightly better in terms of power usage and heat output.

Also the particular GTX260 you are looking at has ALOT of RAM for a card of its performance. You are paying alot extra for this, when it is proved over 1GB of RAM on a graphics card, in most use cases makes no difference.
