1108181 2010-06-08 22:36:00 Try handbrake. It does a pretty good job re-encoding stuff.

Try opening the files in VLC and then go to codec information, what formats does it list there?

Opened 1 file.

Stream 1 Codec: mp4a
Stream 0 Codec: h264

That would be mp4 already, no need to convert it to anything.

YouTube only uses flv & mp4 these days, so anything you download can be downloaded as mp4 without the need to convert it.
I find, Firefox + Download Helper plugin works wonders on YT. It gives you options to download at all the resolutions the video supports and in .flv or .mp4 formats + convert if necessary.

Almost. There are a few videos on the site that, for whatever reason, are only available in low-res FLV. .I'm guessing that they're the older videos.

Some of their stuff also uses avc1.

I've never had much luck converting FLVs and MP4s using VLC, but I just fired up handbrake, and it seems to load all the youtube videos I have lying around just fine (including FLVs, and MP4s, including full-hd ones).

The only problem is that handbrake dropped support for AVI as an output format a while ago. If you're lucky, you could track down an old version though.

1108186 2010-06-09 01:07:00 Missed the edit window. Bah.

If you want to encode into AVI format, using the XviD codec, see if you can track down version 0.9.3 of handbrake.

1108187 2010-06-09 01:18:00 Thanks for all the help but I think I'll give the conversion a miss.
The keepvid.com is a whole lot easier. I'll just have to redo some of the John Clarke & Brian Dawe interviews.

1108189 2010-06-09 09:30:00 I prefer the keepvid.com option.
Dont have to install 3rd party software.
Also I don't run FF.
