| 815917 | 2009-10-01 20:05:00 | the depot's are run by the UN (or red cross) when crap happens the UN can ship as many boxes as needed from the nearest depot. when donations start arriving, they are used to re-stock the depot. Sadly, the UN is a catastrophic failure when it comes to times such as these (I'm talking generally, not about the issue Samoa). The UN (or anyone for that matter) can ship whatever aid they want, and the people receive very little of this. Most of it goes through the crack holes of corruption. And sadly there is no one to fix this. If anything you will need someone there who will prevent the aid from being mismanaged. How are you going to stop an armed gang or militia from seizing most for themselves and in turn financing their own war efforts? The only way of delivering aid responsibly would be with troops, who have permission to use force to stop this from happening. So you have two choices, send in troops and have scandals - innocent people being killed, allegation of HR violations, corruption and whatnot; or send aid and let the politicians and whoever is armed to make huge profits for their cause (or their pocket). It's a lose lose for all involved. Just like the TV charity joke that happened here. (This is why the UNDP accomplishes next to nothing, and why I would never donate anything except my manpower.) Nations are never philanthropists, people always have their agenda before they do anything. And while I commend that we send aid and such, as I am sure we too would get, there is always an issue. We respond quicker than America responded to Katrina. Which says something. |

A government is a body of people, usually notably ungoverned. |
